| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, Proud residents of Galveston County are gathering |

| 3 | 3 | | in Austin on March 6, 2019, to celebrate Galveston County Day at |
|---|
| 4 | 4 | | the State Capitol; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Covering approximately 870 square miles of lush |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | grasslands, warm beaches, and sparkling waters, Galveston County |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | was founded in 1838 and has a history highlighted by explorers, |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | pirates, and international intrigue; it also holds the record for |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | the country's deadliest natural disaster with the hurricane that |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | made landfall in September 1900 and killed more than 6,000 |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | people; and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, The ports of Galveston and Texas City contributed |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | greatly to the rebuilding of the area after the hurricane, and |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | along with the chemical and petrochemical complex, continue to be |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | important to the economic development of the county; additionally, |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | agriculture, livestock, and the fishing and shrimping industries |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | provide jobs for many residents of the region; and |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Galveston today is a center for medical services, |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | marine research, and a number of institutions of higher |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | education, including The University of Texas Medical Branch, |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | Texas A&M University at Galveston, the College of the Mainland, |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | and Galveston College; and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Visitors are drawn to the county's natural beauty |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | and miles of beaches and also enjoy such attractions as the |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | Galveston County Fair and Rodeo, the Galveston Island Wild Texas |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | Shrimp Festival, and the Blessing of the Fleet at Kemah; other |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | points of interest include the Lone Star Flight Museum and Moody |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | Gardens; and |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, Galveston County is blessed with abundant natural |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | resources and a fascinating past, and its citizens may take great |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | pride in their continuing contributions to the story of the Lone |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | Star State; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | Legislature, hereby recognize March 6, 2019, as Galveston County |

| 35 | 35 | | Day at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation |
