55 WHEREAS, The passing of Dr. Baker Pattillo of Nacogdoches
66 on December 29, 2018, at the age of 75, brought great sorrow to
77 his family and friends, as well as to the campus community of
88 Stephen F. Austin State University, which he served with great
99 distinction for more than five decades; and
1010 WHEREAS, Born in Camden on June 22, 1943, Baker Pattillo
1111 was the son of the Reverend Leroy Pattillo and Mauree Pattillo;
1212 he moved with his family to Arp in 1956 and lettered as a member
1313 of the Tigers football team at Arp High School, where his
1414 classmates voted him "most likely to succeed"; he subsequently
1515 put himself through college; after studying first at Tyler Junior
1616 College, he earned his bachelor's degree in 1965 and his master's
1717 degree in guidance and counseling in 1966 from Stephen F. Austin
1818 State University; he later completed a doctoral degree in
1919 educational administration at Texas A&M University; and
2020 WHEREAS, Dr. Pattillo was hired as assistant director of
2121 placement and financial aid at Stephen F. Austin State University
2222 in 1966; he was promoted to dean of student services in 1972 and
2323 to vice president for student affairs in 1979; after being
2424 appointed interim president in July 2006, he assumed the office
2525 of president in January 2007; and
2626 WHEREAS, Over the course of his 11-year tenure as
2727 president, Dr. Pattillo coordinated campus projects that totaled
2828 more than $425 million, including a student recreation center, a
2929 nursing building, and three residential buildings; moreover, he
3030 took well-deserved pride in securing $150 million in funding for
3131 four additional facilities during his last day of work; under his
3232 leadership, the university exceeded 13,000 in enrollment,
3333 surpassing its previous record, and Dr. Pattillo enjoyed a strong
3434 rapport with students, as well as with faculty, staff, regents,
3535 and state and national leaders; and
3636 WHEREAS, Dr. Pattillo shared 52 years of marriage with his
3737 wife, Janice Pattillo, whom he wed on December 17, 1966, and they
3838 were blessed with a daughter, Paige, a grandson, Jackson, and a
3939 son-in-law, Todd; and
4040 WHEREAS, Through his vision and leadership, Dr. Baker
4141 Pattillo contributed immeasurably to advancing the mission of
4242 Stephen F. Austin State University, and he leaves behind a legacy
4343 that will continue to resonate for years to come; now, therefore,
4444 be it
4545 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
4646 Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the life of Dr. Baker Pattillo
4747 and extend deepest condolences to his relatives and many friends;
4848 and, be it further
4949 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
5050 his family and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
5151 memory of Dr. Baker Pattillo.
