SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 509 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize the Houston Metropolitan Area Chapters of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, which will welcome a new chapter, the Pearls of Lake Houston, on May 19, 2019; and WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority is an international service organization established in 1908 on the campus of Howard University, in Washington, D.C.; the sorority is composed of distinguished and successful women who project excellence in their communities; and WHEREAS, The Pearls of Lake Houston interest group includes 63 women from diverse professional backgrounds; founded in 2017, the organization partners with local businesses, school districts, and individuals to serve the communities of New Caney, Porter, Kingwood, Huffman, Atascocita, Lake Houston, and Sheldon; and WHEREAS, Since the group's inception, the members of the Pearls of Lake Houston have worked diligently on behalf of their communities; their many service projects have benefited struggling children and families, local school districts, senior living centers, and environmental causes; and WHEREAS, The Pearls of Lake Houston group represents the highest ideals of civic service, and it is truly fitting that the organization become part of the prestigious Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th Legislature, hereby commend the members of the Houston Metropolitan Area Chapters of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority for their many contributions to their communities and extend to them congratulations on the newest addition to their family of exemplary community organizations; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the sorority as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
