SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 594
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes great
pleasure in recognizing the Baylor University Lady Bears
basketball team, which has won the 2019 National Collegiate
Athletic Association championship competition; and
WHEREAS, These skilled athletes earned their place in the
Final Four and ultimately claimed the title over defending
champions, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, by a score of 82-81 in
front of a crowd of 20,000; and
WHEREAS, In their lead-up to the championship, the Lady
Bears were steadfast in maintaining their focus and keeping their
reputation as a dominant force in women's college basketball; and
WHEREAS, The talented players faced a third-quarter blow
in their final game of the tournament when their star forward
sustained a knee injury that pulled her off the court; their
opponents mounted a ferocious comeback to tie the game in the
fourth quarter, and the Lady Bears pushed their trademark defense
to claim their third national championship title with only eight
seconds left in the game; and
WHEREAS, Under the outstanding leadership of renowned
coach Kim Mulkey, the Baylor Lady Bears have maintained their
reputation for excellence on the court and have gained a loyal
following of fans around the state and across the nation; the
Lone Star State is proud of the team for their most recent of many
achievements; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
Legislature, hereby commend the members of the Baylor University
Lady Bears basketball team for their impressive skills and fine
sportsmanship and congratulate them on earning the 2019 National
Collegiate Athletic Association championship title; and, be
it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
the team as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
