A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
AN ACT
relating to additional service credit for certain members of the
Teacher Retirement System of Texas.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
SECTION 1. Chapter 823, Government Code, is amended by
adding Subchapter G to read as follows:
SUBCHAPTER G. ADDITIONAL SERVICE CREDIT RELATED TO COVID-19
Sec. 823.551. ADDITIONAL SERVICE CREDIT FOR EMPLOYMENT
DURING CERTAIN SCHOOL YEARS. (a) A member is entitled to service
credit under this section if the member:
(1) was employed by an employer on a full-time basis
during the 2019-2020 or 2020-2021 school year; and
(2) is entitled to service credit for that service.
(b) Notwithstanding Section 821.006 or any other law, other
than Section 825.506, a person described by Subsection (a) is
entitled to an additional year of service credit for each year of
service credit earned during the 2019-2020 or 2020-2021 school
year.
(c) The system shall grant a member entitled to service
credit under this section the appropriate amount of additional
service credit.
SECTION 2. Section 823.551, Government Code, as added by
this Act, applies only to a member of the Teacher Retirement System
of Texas who retires on or after the effective date of this Act.
SECTION 3. This Act takes effect September 1, 2021.
