| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Citizens of Victoria lost an admired member of the |

| 6 | 7 | | business community with the passing of Earley Elton Calhoun Jr. on |

| 7 | 8 | | May 2, 2021, at the age of 75; and |

| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, The son of Mildred Stapleton Calhoun and Earley |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | Elton Calhoun Sr., Elton Calhoun was born in Trout, Louisiana, on |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | June 3, 1945, and grew up with five sisters, Hilda, Mildred, Margie, |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | Johnny, and Georgia, and a brother, Charles; he attended Yazoo City |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | High School in Mississippi and planned to work with his father in |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | the construction business, until Holmes Junior College offered him |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | a football scholarship; transforming from an indifferent to an |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | industrious student, he became the first college graduate in his |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | family, earning a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | Louisiana Tech University; and |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Calhoun was employed for seven years by the |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | Union Carbide Corporation and then went into business as a partner |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | in Sparkman Industries; later, he joined Regional Steel, and in |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | 1986, he became owner and president of the company; and |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Understanding the important role of community |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | colleges, Mr. Calhoun dedicated himself to expanding access to |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | higher education as a member of the board of the Victoria College |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | Foundation, which has provided scholarships to numerous area |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | students; moreover, he gave generously of his time and talents |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | through his service on various other boards and organizations; he |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | was a valued congregant of First United Methodist Church as well; |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | and |

| 30 | 31 | | WHEREAS, On June 1, 1968, Mr. Calhoun married the former |
|---|
| 31 | 32 | | Merle Ann Owen, and they were blessed with three children, Sherry, |
|---|
| 32 | 33 | | Craig, and Jennifer; he eventually became "Deda" to nine |
|---|
| 33 | 34 | | grandchildren, Kyle, Ryan, Mattie, Emily, Kate, Adam, Avery, |
|---|
| 34 | 35 | | Patrick, and Hayley, and watching them pursue their interests and |
|---|
| 35 | 36 | | participate in activities gave him his greatest delight; in |
|---|
| 36 | 37 | | addition, he enjoyed fishing, playing golf, and traveling around |
|---|
| 37 | 38 | | the world with his wife; and |
|---|
| 38 | 39 | | WHEREAS, Elton Calhoun lived a rich and purposeful life |
|---|
| 39 | 40 | | centered around his family and his community, and he will be |
|---|
| 40 | 41 | | remembered with deep affection by all who were fortunate enough to |
|---|
| 41 | 42 | | know him; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 42 | 43 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas |

| 43 | 44 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Earley Elton Calhoun |

| 44 | 45 | | Jr. and extend sincere condolences to his loved ones; and, be it |
