45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, The Highland Park community lost a beloved leader
67 with the passing of Leslie Long Melson on January 24, 2021, at the
78 age of 65; and
89 WHEREAS, Born in Hamilton, Ohio, on July 20, 1955, the former
910 Leslie Ann Long was the oldest child of Bill and Ann Long; "Peach"
1011 helped nurture three younger brothers, David, Steve, and Jeff, as
1112 the family relocated for her father's career, finally settling in
1213 Dallas; and
1314 WHEREAS, While studying art at Southern Methodist
1415 University, she met the love of her life, Jim Melson, and they
1516 married at Highland Park Presbyterian Church on August 19, 1978;
1617 the couple were blessed with four children, Jed, Ann, Ellen, and
1718 John, and while supporting them in their many activities,
1819 Ms. Melson played a maternal role in the lives of many of their
1920 friends as well; eventually, she welcomed into her treasured family
2021 a daughter-in-law, Jennifer, and two sons-in-law, Robby and
2122 Clayton, along with nine grandchildren, Jay, Will, Kyle, Cali Ann,
2223 John, Charley, Reed, Cooper, and Carter; she encouraged them in all
2324 their passions, and notably joined a son-in-law in cheering the Los
2425 Angeles Dodgers on to the 2020 World Series title; and
2526 WHEREAS, Ms. Melson was dedicated to the Highland Park
2627 Independent School District and gave generously of her time and
2728 talents to the PTA and the HP Education Foundation; for nearly a
2829 decade, she served on the board of HPISD, and she was also a
2930 presiding member of the board of HP Arts; in addition, she served
3031 her alma mater as a trustee and as president of the Alumni
3132 Association; a woman of deep faith, she was actively involved in
3233 Highland Park Presbyterian Church as well; she cherished happy
3334 times with her loved ones at Marita Ranch in East Texas and Amelia
3435 Island in Florida, and her compassion for animals led her to adopt a
3536 host of cats, dogs, and even baby goats; and
3637 WHEREAS, Although Leslie Melson is greatly missed, the
3738 passage of time will never diminish the joy and love she brought
3839 into the lives of all who knew her, and they will forever treasure
3940 their memories of her warmth, grace, and kindness; now, therefore,
4041 be it
4142 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas
4243 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Leslie Long Melson and
4344 extend sincere sympathy to all who mourn her passing; and, be it
4445 further
4546 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4647 prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of
4748 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Leslie Long
4849 Melson.
