5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The Highland Park community lost a beloved leader |

6 | 7 | | with the passing of Leslie Long Melson on January 24, 2021, at the |

7 | 8 | | age of 65; and |

8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Born in Hamilton, Ohio, on July 20, 1955, the former |
---|
9 | 10 | | Leslie Ann Long was the oldest child of Bill and Ann Long; "Peach" |
---|
10 | 11 | | helped nurture three younger brothers, David, Steve, and Jeff, as |
---|
11 | 12 | | the family relocated for her father's career, finally settling in |
---|
12 | 13 | | Dallas; and |
---|
13 | 14 | | WHEREAS, While studying art at Southern Methodist |
---|
14 | 15 | | University, she met the love of her life, Jim Melson, and they |
---|
15 | 16 | | married at Highland Park Presbyterian Church on August 19, 1978; |
---|
16 | 17 | | the couple were blessed with four children, Jed, Ann, Ellen, and |
---|
17 | 18 | | John, and while supporting them in their many activities, |
---|
18 | 19 | | Ms. Melson played a maternal role in the lives of many of their |
---|
19 | 20 | | friends as well; eventually, she welcomed into her treasured family |
---|
20 | 21 | | a daughter-in-law, Jennifer, and two sons-in-law, Robby and |
---|
21 | 22 | | Clayton, along with nine grandchildren, Jay, Will, Kyle, Cali Ann, |
---|
22 | 23 | | John, Charley, Reed, Cooper, and Carter; she encouraged them in all |
---|
23 | 24 | | their passions, and notably joined a son-in-law in cheering the Los |
---|
24 | 25 | | Angeles Dodgers on to the 2020 World Series title; and |

25 | 26 | | WHEREAS, Ms. Melson was dedicated to the Highland Park |
---|
26 | 27 | | Independent School District and gave generously of her time and |
---|
27 | 28 | | talents to the PTA and the HP Education Foundation; for nearly a |
---|
28 | 29 | | decade, she served on the board of HPISD, and she was also a |
---|
29 | 30 | | presiding member of the board of HP Arts; in addition, she served |
---|
30 | 31 | | her alma mater as a trustee and as president of the Alumni |
---|
31 | 32 | | Association; a woman of deep faith, she was actively involved in |
---|
32 | 33 | | Highland Park Presbyterian Church as well; she cherished happy |
---|
33 | 34 | | times with her loved ones at Marita Ranch in East Texas and Amelia |
---|
34 | 35 | | Island in Florida, and her compassion for animals led her to adopt a |
---|
35 | 36 | | host of cats, dogs, and even baby goats; and |
---|
36 | 37 | | WHEREAS, Although Leslie Melson is greatly missed, the |
---|
37 | 38 | | passage of time will never diminish the joy and love she brought |
---|
38 | 39 | | into the lives of all who knew her, and they will forever treasure |
---|
39 | 40 | | their memories of her warmth, grace, and kindness; now, therefore, |

41 | 42 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas |

42 | 43 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Leslie Long Melson and |
