45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, William and Addie Garner, the founders of Mr. and
67 Mrs. G's Home Cooking and Pastries in San Antonio, shared an
78 enduring love story, and their family is celebrating the couple's
89 legacy as they reflect on the recent passing of Mr. Garner on March
910 1, 2021, at the age of 83, and on the passing of Mrs. Garner on
1011 September 11, 2017, at the age of 82; and
1112 WHEREAS, William F. Garner Sr. was born in Hartselle,
1213 Alabama, on August 28, 1937, to Laura Orr and Willie Garner;
1314 answering his nation's call to duty, he served in the U.S. Air Force
1415 from 1958 to 1978; during his first marriage, to Geraldine Luckey,
1516 he became the proud father of three children, Deborah, William, and
1617 Vicky; and
1718 WHEREAS, Born on June 7, 1935, in Inverness, Mississippi,
1819 Addie Beatrice Garner was the ninth of the 14 children of Blain
1920 Quinn and Addie B. Brownlee; she grew up in the Midwest and attended
2021 business college in Cleveland, Ohio; in 1960, she married Ewing
2122 Ford and became the proud mother of three sons, Darrell, LaTeese,
2223 and China; after her first marriage ended in 1976, she moved to San
2324 Antonio, where she worked for a time at Sears; and
2425 WHEREAS, In 1986, William and Addie were married, and in July
2526 1990, the couple opened Mr. and Mrs. G's Home Cooking and Pastries
2627 on the East Side of San Antonio; the small restaurant quickly became
2728 a local landmark, featuring soul food specialties and Mrs. Garner's
2829 popular pastries; the couple cooked all the food themselves, and
2930 they were welcoming hosts to everyone who entered their door; as the
3031 reputation of the restaurant grew, it won many Readers' Choice
3132 awards from the San Antonio Express-News, and it was regularly
3233 featured in local TV news broadcasts and in such publications as USA
3334 Today and the San Antonio Business Journal; and
3435 WHEREAS, Both Mr. and Mrs. Garner were profoundly religious;
3536 Mr. Garner served as a pastor, and Mrs. Garner was a member of
3637 Greater Ball Tabernacle African Methodist Episcopal Church at the
3738 time of her passing; Mr. Garner was also an active member of the
3839 Rotary Club; the couple had the pleasure of seeing their blended
3940 family grow to include 13 grandchildren, Vicky, Michael, Zameika,
4041 Iyaesha, Tyreese, Yvonne, Crystal, William, Francis, Dimitria,
4142 Darryl, Tabyana, and Malik, 9 great-grandchildren, Dechele,
4243 Aaliyah, Aisha, Jer-Mykal, Cyvon, Cyvanna, Destiny, Leila, and
4344 Frances, and 2 great-great-grandchildren, Liana and Lilly; and
4445 WHEREAS, Deeply dedicated to their family, their community,
4546 and their faith, William and Addie Garner set an inspiring example
4647 of lasting devotion to one another and selfless service to others,
4748 and they will forever hold a special place in the hearts of all who
4849 knew and loved them; now, therefore, be it
4950 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas
5051 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of William and Addie
5152 Garner and extend sincere condolences to their loved ones; and, be
5253 it further
5354 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5455 prepared for their family and that when the Texas House of
5556 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of William and
5657 Addie Garner.
