| 6 | 8 | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: | |
| 7 | 9 | SECTION 1. Section 1701.601, Occupations Code, is amended | |
| 8 | 10 | to read as follows: | |
| 9 | 11 | Sec. 1701.601. DEFINITION. In this subchapter, "school | |
| 10 | 12 | resource officer" means a peace officer who is assigned by the | |
| 11 | 13 | officer's employing political subdivision to provide[: | |
| 12 | 14 | [(1)] a police presence at a public school,[; | |
| 13 | 15 | [(2)] safety or drug education to students of a public | |
| 14 | 16 | school,[;] or | |
| 15 | 17 | [(3)] other similar services. The term does not | |
| 16 | 18 | include a peace officer who provides law enforcement at: | |
| 17 | 19 | (1) a public school only for extracurricular | |
| 18 | 20 | activities; or | |
| 19 | 21 | (2) a public school event only for extracurricular | |
| 20 | 22 | activities. | |
| 21 | 23 | SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 2021. | |
