| 6 | 8 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

| 7 | 9 | | SECTION 1. Section 54.526(a), Education Code, is amended to |
|---|
| 8 | 10 | | read as follows: |

| 9 | 11 | | (a) The board of regents of the University of Houston System |
|---|
| 10 | 12 | | may levy a student union fee, not to exceed $150 per student for |
|---|
| 11 | 13 | | each regular semester and not to exceed $75 per student for each |
|---|
| 12 | 14 | | term of the summer session. The sole purpose of the fee is |
|---|
| 13 | 15 | | financing, constructing, operating, maintaining, [and] improving, |
|---|
| 14 | 16 | | and providing programming at a Student Union Building for the |
|---|
| 15 | 17 | | University of Houston. The fees herein authorized to be levied are |
|---|
| 16 | 18 | | in addition to any use or service fee now or hereafter authorized to |
|---|
| 17 | 19 | | be levied. |
|---|
| 18 | 20 | | SECTION 2. Section 54.526(a), Education Code, as amended by |
|---|
| 19 | 21 | | this Act, applies to student fees imposed for a semester or term |
|---|
| 20 | 22 | | beginning before, on, or after the effective date of this Act. |
|---|
| 21 | 23 | | SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives |
|---|
| 22 | 24 | | a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as |
|---|
| 23 | 25 | | provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this |
|---|
| 24 | 26 | | Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this |
|---|
| 25 | 27 | | Act takes effect September 1, 2021. |
