55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
66 commemorates the life of Duke Matthews Covert, an esteemed member
77 of the Austin community, who died December 22, 2020, at the age of
88 74; and
99 WHEREAS, Duke Covert was born on August 15, 1946; he grew
1010 up in Austin and graduated from Stephen F. Austin High School,
1111 where he was a standout athlete; he attended Texas Christian
1212 University on a football scholarship before transferring to The
1313 University of Texas at Austin, where he was a member of Phi Gamma
1414 Delta fraternity and earned a degree in finance; and
1515 WHEREAS, Duke married Lynne Shapiro on February 1, 1969, and
1616 they were blessed with more than five decades together; they were
1717 also blessed with three daughters, Courtney Covert Elliott, Kacy
1818 Covert Tolleson, and Kimberley Covert Robinson, and with 10
1919 grandchildren, who were a source of much pride and joy for him; and
2020 WHEREAS, As a youth, Mr. Covert spent time during summers
2121 and weekends helping his father in the family's automobile
2222 dealership, which was established by his great-grandfather in
2323 1909; he joined the business full-time as an adult, and he worked
2424 alongside his brothers Danay and Rox to expand the business and
2525 to make it one of the largest family-owned dealerships in the
2626 state; and
2727 WHEREAS, A devoted Christian who was guided by his faith in
2828 his daily life, Duke was a lifelong member of the Episcopal
2929 Church of the Good Shepherd; he was grateful for the many rewards
3030 he had been blessed with, and he took great pleasure in sharing
3131 those gifts by providing opportunities for others and by serving
3232 as a mentor to many young people; and
3333 WHEREAS, A man of courage, wisdom, and generosity, he gave
3434 unselfishly to others, and his enthusiasm for living each day to
3535 the fullest will long be a source of inspiration to those who were
3636 privileged to share in his life; and
3737 WHEREAS, He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather,
3838 and he leaves behind memories that will be cherished forever by
3939 his family and countless friends; now, therefore, be it
4040 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th
4141 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
4242 family of Duke Matthews Covert; and, be it further
4343 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4444 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
4545 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
4646 memory of Duke Covert.
