5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and |
---|
6 | 6 | | commemorates the life of Duke Matthews Covert, an esteemed member |
---|
7 | 7 | | of the Austin community, who died December 22, 2020, at the age of |
---|
8 | 8 | | 74; and |
---|
9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Duke Covert was born on August 15, 1946; he grew |
---|
10 | 10 | | up in Austin and graduated from Stephen F. Austin High School, |
---|
11 | 11 | | where he was a standout athlete; he attended Texas Christian |
---|
12 | 12 | | University on a football scholarship before transferring to The |
---|
13 | 13 | | University of Texas at Austin, where he was a member of Phi Gamma |
---|
14 | 14 | | Delta fraternity and earned a degree in finance; and |
---|
15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Duke married Lynne Shapiro on February 1, 1969, and |
---|
16 | 16 | | they were blessed with more than five decades together; they were |
---|
17 | 17 | | also blessed with three daughters, Courtney Covert Elliott, Kacy |
---|
18 | 18 | | Covert Tolleson, and Kimberley Covert Robinson, and with 10 |
---|
19 | 19 | | grandchildren, who were a source of much pride and joy for him; and |
---|
20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, As a youth, Mr. Covert spent time during summers |
---|
21 | 21 | | and weekends helping his father in the family's automobile |
---|
22 | 22 | | dealership, which was established by his great-grandfather in |
---|
23 | 23 | | 1909; he joined the business full-time as an adult, and he worked |
---|
24 | 24 | | alongside his brothers Danay and Rox to expand the business and |
---|
25 | 25 | | to make it one of the largest family-owned dealerships in the |
---|
26 | 26 | | state; and |
---|
27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, A devoted Christian who was guided by his faith in |
---|
28 | 28 | | his daily life, Duke was a lifelong member of the Episcopal |
---|
29 | 29 | | Church of the Good Shepherd; he was grateful for the many rewards |
---|
30 | 30 | | he had been blessed with, and he took great pleasure in sharing |
---|
31 | 31 | | those gifts by providing opportunities for others and by serving |
---|
32 | 32 | | as a mentor to many young people; and |
---|
33 | 33 | | WHEREAS, A man of courage, wisdom, and generosity, he gave |
---|
34 | 34 | | unselfishly to others, and his enthusiasm for living each day to |
---|
35 | 35 | | the fullest will long be a source of inspiration to those who were |
---|
36 | 36 | | privileged to share in his life; and |
---|
37 | 37 | | WHEREAS, He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, |
---|
38 | 38 | | and he leaves behind memories that will be cherished forever by |
---|
39 | 39 | | his family and countless friends; now, therefore, be it |
---|
40 | 40 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th |
---|
41 | 41 | | Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved |
---|
42 | 42 | | family of Duke Matthews Covert; and, be it further |
---|
43 | 43 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
---|
44 | 44 | | his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas |
---|
45 | 45 | | Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in |
---|
46 | 46 | | memory of Duke Covert. |
