11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 176
22 WHEREAS, The 104th birthday of an esteemed Texan is truly
33 cause for celebration, and Georgia Raven Rosborough of Marshall
44 reached that impressive milestone on February 22, 2021; and
55 WHEREAS, Born in 1917 in the Shady Grove community near
66 Marshall, Mrs. Rosborough grew up on a farm with two sisters and
77 three brothers, learning the value of hard work at an early age;
88 she was the valedictorian of her seventh-grade class, after which
99 she had to leave school to help support her family by making
1010 quilts with her mother and working on the family farm; and
1111 WHEREAS, After marrying, Mrs. Rosborough farmed with her
1212 husband, raising crops as well as chickens, cows, and hogs, and
1313 she continued to maintain the farm with her sons after her
1414 husband's death in 1965; three years later, she found employment
1515 at a nursing home, where she worked in the laundry; she married
1616 again in 1975, and in 1992, she retired from the nursing home at
1717 the age of 75; and
1818 WHEREAS, In retirement, Mrs. Rosborough took up crafts and
1919 began making refrigerator magnets; she eventually returned to
2020 sewing quilts, taking orders and shipping her creations around
2121 the world; today she enjoys reading and playing dominos, and she
2222 continues to attend Shady Grove Christian Methodist Episcopal
2323 Church in Marshall when she can; and
2424 WHEREAS, Mrs. Rosborough is the proud matriarch of a
2525 family that has grown to include 12 children along with three
2626 additional generations; on the occasion of her 100th birthday in
2727 2017, a book about her life, Georgia, was published, written by
2828 one of her granddaughters and illustrated by another, and on
2929 February 27, 2021, her 104th was celebrated with a socially
3030 distanced drive-by parade in Marshall; and
3131 WHEREAS, The granddaughter of a former slave, Georgia
3232 Rosborough has lived through a panorama of change, and she has
3333 met life's challenges and opportunities with dignity and grace,
3434 earning the deep admiration of all who are privileged to know
3535 her; now, therefore, be it
3636 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th
3737 Legislature, hereby congratulate Georgia Raven Rosborough on her
3838 104th birthday and extend to her sincere best wishes for
3939 continued happiness; and, be it further
4040 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
4141 prepared for Mrs. Rosborough as an expression of high regard from
4242 the Texas Senate.
