SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 329
WHEREAS, Through their swift actions, four Wichita Falls
High School football coaches played instrumental roles in
helping to save the life of a student on September 7, 2020; and
WHEREAS, On that day, Wichita Falls coaches Joshua Burris,
Garrett Evans, Grant Freeman, and Ryan Quezada were overseeing a
weight-lifting session for the football team when one of its
members collapsed; using their American Red Cross training, the
men immediately placed a call to 9-1-1, began conducting
assessments, and performed chest compressions on the youth, who
was lying unresponsive on the floor; the young man responded to
the treatment and was placed in one of the Red Cross's
recommended recovery positions for the emergency medical
services personnel who arrived shortly thereafter; and
WHEREAS, In recognition of their efforts, Coaches Burris,
Evans, Freeman, and Quezada were presented with American Red
Cross Lifesaving Awards for Professional Responders; the
accolade honors those individuals who have helped to save or
sustain a life by applying the training they have acquired in Red
Cross courses; and
WHEREAS, By acting with skill and composure when every
second counted, these dedicated Texans helped to prevent a crisis
situation from becoming a tragedy, and their efforts indeed merit
special recognition; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th
Legislature, hereby commend Wichita Falls High School football
coaches Joshua Burris, Garrett Evans, Grant Freeman, and Ryan
Quezada for their actions in helping to save the life of a student
and extend to these men sincere best wishes for the future; and,
be it further
RESOLVED, That official copies of this Resolution be
prepared for the coaches as an expression of high regard from the
Texas Senate.
