| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |
|---|
| 3 | 3 | | join Texans across the state in observing May of 2021 as Mental |
|---|
| 4 | 4 | | Health Awareness Month; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Mental illness is a treatable health condition |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | that directly and indirectly affects people across the state, |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | with more than 3.3 million Texans currently living with a mental |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | illness; half of all mental health conditions manifest by the age |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | of 14, and 75 percent appear by early adulthood; and |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Suicide is the second-leading cause of death |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | among people between the ages of 10 and 34 and the 10th-leading |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | cause of death in the United States; nearly 4,000 Texans lost |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | their lives to suicide in 2019 alone; and |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | contributed to declining mental health for children, |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | adolescents, and adults; during the pandemic, four in 10 adults |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | have reported symptoms of anxiety or depressive disorder, an |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | increase from the one in 10 who reported these symptoms the |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | previous year; and |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Individuals can learn to manage their mental |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | health conditions and can often fully recover if they are able to |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | access and receive proper treatment; the Texas Statewide |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | Behavioral Health Coordinating Council has established a |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | website, MentalHealthTX.org, which serves as a resource to |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | assist Texans in gaining access to mental health care; and |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, Increasing public awareness of mental health and |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | improving the availability of mental health resources can |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | dramatically improve the well-being of individuals and society; |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | Legislature, hereby recognize May of 2021 as Mental Health |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | Awareness Month; and, be it further |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | honor of this special occasion. |
