SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 335 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to join Texans across the state in observing May of 2021 as Mental Health Awareness Month; and WHEREAS, Mental illness is a treatable health condition that directly and indirectly affects people across the state, with more than 3.3 million Texans currently living with a mental illness; half of all mental health conditions manifest by the age of 14, and 75 percent appear by early adulthood; and WHEREAS, Suicide is the second-leading cause of death among people between the ages of 10 and 34 and the 10th-leading cause of death in the United States; nearly 4,000 Texans lost their lives to suicide in 2019 alone; and WHEREAS, The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly contributed to declining mental health for children, adolescents, and adults; during the pandemic, four in 10 adults have reported symptoms of anxiety or depressive disorder, an increase from the one in 10 who reported these symptoms the previous year; and WHEREAS, Individuals can learn to manage their mental health conditions and can often fully recover if they are able to access and receive proper treatment; the Texas Statewide Behavioral Health Coordinating Council has established a website, MentalHealthTX.org, which serves as a resource to assist Texans in gaining access to mental health care; and WHEREAS, Increasing public awareness of mental health and improving the availability of mental health resources can dramatically improve the well-being of individuals and society; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th Legislature, hereby recognize May of 2021 as Mental Health Awareness Month; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in honor of this special occasion.
