1	1	SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 431
2	2	WHEREAS, Cystic fibrosis, commonly referred to as CF, is a
3	3	genetic disease that affects approximately 30,000 children and
4	4	adults in the United States and nearly 70,000 children and adults
5	5	worldwide, more than 2,000 of whom live in this state; and
6	6	WHEREAS, In persons with cystic fibrosis, a defective gene
7	7	causes the body to produce an abnormally thick, sticky mucus that
8	8	clogs the lungs, and these secretions produce life-threatening
9	9	lung infections; the secretions also obstruct the pancreas and
10	10	prevent its digestive enzymes from reaching the intestines to
11	11	help the body break down and absorb food; and
12	12	WHEREAS, More than 10 million Americans are symptomless
13	13	carriers of the defective CF gene, and this disease occurs in
14	14	approximately one of every 3,500 live births in the United
15	15	States; the median predicted age of survival for a person with
16	16	cystic fibrosis born in 2017 was 46.2 years; and
17	17	WHEREAS, With advances in the treatment of CF, the number
18	18	of adults living with this disease has steadily grown, and
19	19	approximately 900 new cases of cystic fibrosis are diagnosed each
20	20	year; more than 50 percent of the affected population is 18 years
21	21	of age or older, and people with the disease have a variety of
22	22	symptoms attributed to the more than 1,800 mutations of the CF
23	23	gene; and
24	24	WHEREAS, Infant blood screening to detect genetic defects
25	25	is the most reliable and least costly method to identify persons
26	26	likely to have cystic fibrosis; early diagnosis of the disease
27	27	permits early treatment, which enhances the quality of life and
28	28	longevity of patients; the treatment of CF depends on the stage
29	29	of the disease and the organs involved; and
30	30	WHEREAS, Clearing mucus from the lungs is an important part
31	31	of the daily CF treatment regimen; other types of treatments
32	32	include taking pancreatic enzymes and inhaled antibiotics; and
33	33	WHEREAS, A critical component of treating patients with
34	34	cystic fibrosis is access to innovative treatments, which can
35	35	play a crucial role in the lives of patients with CF; and
36	36	WHEREAS, There are 11 world-class treatment centers in
37	37	this state which specialize in the diagnosis of cystic fibrosis
38	38	and the care of persons with CF; and
39	39	WHEREAS, Improving the length and quality of life for
40	40	people with CF starts with awareness; now, therefore, be it
41	41	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th
42	42	Legislature, hereby designate the month of May 2021 as Cystic
43	43	Fibrosis Awareness Month in Texas.
