3 | 3 | | approved for an Official Texas Historical Marker on June 15, |

5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, In 1908, Wayman Asbury White began selling |
---|
6 | 6 | | coffins for Captain J. A. Kidd's general mercantile store in |
---|
7 | 7 | | Springtown, and after moving to Poolville in 1913, he continued |
---|
8 | 8 | | to specialize in selling coffins for another store; in 1914, he |
---|
9 | 9 | | moved to Weatherford and established an undertaking business, |
---|
10 | 10 | | and he was among the first in the area to adopt progressive new |
---|
11 | 11 | | practices; and |
---|
12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, Mr. White built a funeral home on Houston Avenue |
---|
13 | 13 | | in Weatherford in 1930, and other members of his family joined in |
---|
14 | 14 | | the business, including his brother, J. Herschel White, his son, |
---|
15 | 15 | | Ford White, and his son-in-law, Morris Sands; a decade later, the |
---|
16 | 16 | | funeral home became one of the first to sell burial insurance |
---|
17 | 17 | | policies, and in the 1950s, it was among the first to offer an |
---|
18 | 18 | | air-conditioned chapel; and |
---|
19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, In the years since, White's Funeral Homes has |
---|
20 | 20 | | expanded to several more locations, and in 1980, it purchased the |
---|
21 | 21 | | Memory Gardens of Valley Memorial Park along Mineral Wells |
---|
22 | 22 | | Highway; today, the business remains in the White family, owned |
---|
23 | 23 | | and operated by the grandson of W. A. White, Bob White, and his |
---|
24 | 24 | | wife, Carolynn White, with the assistance of their daughter, |
---|
25 | 25 | | Anita White, and their grandson, Zack Bellenger; in 2015, the |
---|
26 | 26 | | business was accepted into the Texas Treasure Business Award |
---|
27 | 27 | | Program, which recognizes businesses that have contributed to |
---|
28 | 28 | | their community for more than 50 years; and |
---|
29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, For over a century, the White family and their |
---|
30 | 30 | | funeral homes have played a vital role in Parker County and the |
---|
31 | 31 | | surrounding region, and recognition from the Texas Historical |
---|
32 | 32 | | Commission pays well-deserved tribute to the business's long |
---|
33 | 33 | | record of service; now, therefore, be it |
---|
34 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th |
---|
35 | 35 | | Legislature, hereby congratulate White's Funeral Homes on being |
---|
36 | 36 | | approved for an Official Texas Historical Marker and extend to |
---|
37 | 37 | | the White family and their employees sincere best wishes for the |
---|
38 | 38 | | future; and, be it further |

39 | 39 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be |
