No. 31 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, The thousands of deaths caused by COVID-19 in Texas have created a tremendous void in families, communities, and workplaces throughout the state; among those who lost their lives in the pandemic was Harold Smith, a dedicated and well-respected correctional officer with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, who passed away on December 15, 2020, at the age of 77; and WHEREAS, Officer Smith was a valued member of the staff of the Jordan Unit for five and a half years; a dedicated public servant, he joined the Department of Criminal Justice following his retirement as an inspector with the Texas Department of Transportation; and WHEREAS, Devoted to his family, Mr. Smith took great pride in his four children and seven grandchildren and loved to spend time with them; an active individual, he benefited youth in the town of Panhandle as a scoutmaster for Troop 501, and in his free time, he loved to read about railroads; he was a great conversationalist and a good listener as well, qualities that never failed to brighten the workday for his colleagues; and WHEREAS, Harold Smith faithfully and ably performed his duties throughout his tenure with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, and he will long be remembered with great admiration by all who were privileged to know him; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the life of Harold Smith and extend deepest sympathy to his family, friends, and colleagues; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Harold Smith.
