| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins Texans |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | across the state in paying tribute to the late Roel Garcia on the |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | occasion of the dedication of the Corporal Roel Garcia Memorial |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | Highway; and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, A highly respected trooper with the Texas |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | Department of Public Safety, Corporal Garcia was en route to |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | Raymondville to participate with a drug task force when he |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | tragically lost his life on March 26, 1997, at the age of 37; a |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | native of Falfurrias, he joined the Department of Public Safety |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | in June of 1981, and he served the people of Texas with |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | distinction for nearly 16 years; and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Over the course of his distinguished career, he |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | earned numerous letters of commendation, and he was the recipient |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | of a Director's Citation for his exceptional work on 20 drug |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | interdiction cases in 1993; he was also a valued instructor in |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | the department's specialized schools; and |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, In recognition of his service and sacrifice, the |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | Texas Senate passed Senate Bill 228 in 2019, which designated a |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | section of U.S. Highway 281 in Brooks County as the Corporal Roel |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | Garcia Memorial Highway; and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, Corporal Roel Garcia was devoted to his family and |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | was an outstanding law enforcement officer who lost his life in |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | service to the people of Texas; it is truly fitting that he be |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | recognized for his contributions to the state and his dedication |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | to his work as a trooper; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby honor the life and legacy |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | of Corporal Roel Garcia on the occasion of the dedication of the |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | Corporal Roel Garcia Memorial Highway; and, be it further |

| 34 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in |
