55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
66 commemorates the life of The Most Reverend Raymundo J. Peña
77 bishop emeritus of Brownsville, who died September 24, 2021, at
88 the age of 87; and
99 WHEREAS, Raymundo Peña was born to Cosme and Elisa Peña on
1010 February 19, 1934, in Corpus Christi; he discerned a call to
1111 serve in the priesthood while growing up in Robstown, and he
1212 attended Saint John and Assumption Seminaries in San Antonio; and
1313 WHEREAS, Bishop Peña was ordained into the priesthood on
1414 May 25, 1957, at the Cathedral of Corpus Christi; his parish
1515 posts included serving as the diocesan youth director and as
1616 editor of the Texas Gulf Coast Catholic, the newspaper for the
1717 Corpus Christi Diocese; and
1818 WHEREAS, He was ordained a bishop in 1976 and was called to
1919 serve as auxiliary bishop of San Antonio, an assignment that
2020 included a six-month tenure as the administrator of the
2121 archdiocese; he went on to lead the Diocese of El Paso for 15
2222 years and was appointed bishop of Brownsville in 1995; he retired
2323 from the priesthood in 2009 as the longest-serving active
2424 Hispanic bishop in the nation; and
2525 WHEREAS, An esteemed leader in the Catholic church, Bishop
2626 Peña chaired multiple committees that addressed concerns of
2727 Hispanics in the United States and Latin America; he was a
2828 tireless and longstanding advocate for immigrants, especially
2929 for those coming into the United States from Mexico; and
3030 WHEREAS, In his service to the community, Bishop Peña fully
3131 lived his episcopal motto, 'Haz todo con amor,' or "Let all that
3232 you do be done in love"; he inspired countless citizens through
3333 his exemplary compassion and dedication to his work on behalf of
3434 others, and he will long be remembered with respect and
3535 admiration by the many who were blessed to share in his life; now,
3636 therefore, be it
3737 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th
3838 Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the life
3939 of The Most Reverend Raymundo J. Peña and extend heartfelt
4040 sympathy to his family and many friends; and, be it further
4141 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4242 Catholic Archives of Texas and that when the Senate adjourns this
4343 day, it do so in memory of the Reverend Raymundo J. Peña.
