5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and |

6 | 6 | | commemorates the life of The Most Reverend Raymundo J. Peña |
---|
7 | 7 | | bishop emeritus of Brownsville, who died September 24, 2021, at |
---|
8 | 8 | | the age of 87; and |
---|
9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Raymundo Peña was born to Cosme and Elisa Peña on |
---|
10 | 10 | | February 19, 1934, in Corpus Christi; he discerned a call to |
---|
11 | 11 | | serve in the priesthood while growing up in Robstown, and he |
---|
12 | 12 | | attended Saint John and Assumption Seminaries in San Antonio; and |
---|
13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, Bishop Peña was ordained into the priesthood on |
---|
14 | 14 | | May 25, 1957, at the Cathedral of Corpus Christi; his parish |
---|
15 | 15 | | posts included serving as the diocesan youth director and as |
---|
16 | 16 | | editor of the Texas Gulf Coast Catholic, the newspaper for the |
---|
17 | 17 | | Corpus Christi Diocese; and |
---|
18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, He was ordained a bishop in 1976 and was called to |
---|
19 | 19 | | serve as auxiliary bishop of San Antonio, an assignment that |
---|
20 | 20 | | included a six-month tenure as the administrator of the |
---|
21 | 21 | | archdiocese; he went on to lead the Diocese of El Paso for 15 |
---|
22 | 22 | | years and was appointed bishop of Brownsville in 1995; he retired |
---|
23 | 23 | | from the priesthood in 2009 as the longest-serving active |
---|
24 | 24 | | Hispanic bishop in the nation; and |
---|
25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, An esteemed leader in the Catholic church, Bishop |
---|
26 | 26 | | Peña chaired multiple committees that addressed concerns of |
---|
27 | 27 | | Hispanics in the United States and Latin America; he was a |
---|
28 | 28 | | tireless and longstanding advocate for immigrants, especially |
---|
29 | 29 | | for those coming into the United States from Mexico; and |
---|
30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, In his service to the community, Bishop Peña fully |
---|
31 | 31 | | lived his episcopal motto, 'Haz todo con amor,' or "Let all that |
---|
32 | 32 | | you do be done in love"; he inspired countless citizens through |
---|
33 | 33 | | his exemplary compassion and dedication to his work on behalf of |
---|
34 | 34 | | others, and he will long be remembered with respect and |
---|
35 | 35 | | admiration by the many who were blessed to share in his life; now, |
---|
36 | 36 | | therefore, be it |
---|
37 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th |
---|
38 | 38 | | Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the life |
---|
39 | 39 | | of The Most Reverend Raymundo J. Peña and extend heartfelt |
---|
40 | 40 | | sympathy to his family and many friends; and, be it further |
---|
41 | 41 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
---|
42 | 42 | | Catholic Archives of Texas and that when the Senate adjourns this |
---|
43 | 43 | | day, it do so in memory of the Reverend Raymundo J. Peña. |
