A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
AN ACT
relating to requiring the Texas Department of Public Safety and the
Texas School Safety Center to provide information and resources
regarding safe firearm storage to school districts and
open-enrollment charter schools for distribution to the parents or
legal custodians of students.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
SECTION 1. Subchapter G, Chapter 37, Education Code, is
amended by adding Section 37.221 to read as follows:
Sec. 37.221. SAFE FIREARM STORAGE INFORMATION. (a) The
Texas Department of Public Safety and the center shall provide to
all school districts and open-enrollment charter schools
information and resources about safe firearm storage to be
distributed through the district or school to the parents or legal
custodians of students.
(b) The information and resources described by subdivision
(a) shall include information about Texas Penal Code Section 46.13
and steps parents and legal custodians can take to prevent children
from accessing a firearm.
SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 2023.
