| 8 | 8 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

| 9 | 9 | | SECTION 1. Section 30.00226, Government Code, is amended by |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | adding Subsection (c) to read as follows: |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | (c) Instead of using a court reporter to preserve a record |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | in a case, the governing body may authorize the use of a good |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | quality electronic recording device to report court proceedings. If |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | the governing body authorizes an electronic recording, the court |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | reporter is not required to be present to certify the reporter's |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | record. The recording shall be kept for the 20-day period beginning |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | the day after the last day of the court proceeding, trial, or denial |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | of motion for new trial, whichever occurs last. If a case is |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | appealed, the proceedings shall be transcribed from the recording |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | by an official court reporter. |

| 21 | 21 | | SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 2023. |
