56 WHEREAS, The Lone Star State lost a business icon and
67 renowned philanthropist with the passing of B. J. "Red" McCombs of
78 San Antonio on February 19, 2023, at the age of 95; and
89 WHEREAS, Billy Joe McCombs was born in the small West Texas
910 town of Spur on October 19, 1927, and earned his nickname for his
1011 mop of red hair; a star athlete in high school, he earned a
1112 scholarship to play football at Southwestern University in
1213 Georgetown in 1945, but he put his studies on hold the following
1314 year to enlist in the United States Army; following his military
1415 service, he enrolled at Del Mar College in Corpus Christi, where he
1516 met the love of his life, the former Charline Hamblin; the couple
1617 exchanged wedding vows in November 1950; and
1718 WHEREAS, Although Mr. McCombs studied law at The University
1819 of Texas at Austin for a time, he changed course and began working
1920 as a car salesman in Corpus Christi, a job that was a natural fit for
2021 his talents and personality; by 1953, he had opened his first used
2122 car dealership, and a year later, he added sports to his business
2223 interests when he joined a friend in purchasing the Corpus Christi
2324 Clippers minor league baseball team, the first of what would be many
2425 sports franchise ventures; and
2526 WHEREAS, Mr. McCombs's well-earned reputation for turning
2627 around struggling businesses was demonstrated early on with a car
2728 dealership in San Antonio, and his auto sales empire ultimately
2829 expanded to more than 60 locations; he became a prominent figure in
2930 the Alamo City, and his involvement was key to the staging of
3031 HemisFair '68, which helped raise the community's stature
3132 nationally and internationally; in 1973, he purchased the Dallas
3233 Chaparrals basketball team and renamed it the San Antonio Spurs,
3334 providing the city with its signature professional team, and he was
3435 later instrumental in the opening of SeaWorld and the construction
3536 of the Alamodome; and
3637 WHEREAS, Demonstrating his business acumen in a broad range
3738 of endeavors, Mr. McCombs co-founded the mass media corporation
3839 Clear Channel Communications, which became iHeartMedia, and
3940 invested in oil and gas, real estate, cattle, motion picture
4041 distribution, and other industries; moreover, his enthusiasm for
4142 sports ownership, which he cited as his favorite business, extended
4243 beyond the Spurs and led to the acquisition of the Denver Nuggets
4344 and the Minnesota Vikings, and to the building of the Circuit of the
4445 Americas racetrack outside Austin; and
4546 WHEREAS, A philanthropist of equally legendary stature,
4647 Mr. McCombs supported a wide array of causes and institutions; in
4748 2000, his gift of $50 million to The University of Texas at Austin
4849 business school resulted in it being renamed the McCombs School of
4950 Business, and his donation of $3 million toward women's athletics
5051 at UT in 1997 led to the development of a new softball complex, the
5152 Red and Charline McCombs Field; Mr. and Mrs. McCombs also
5253 established the McCombs Foundation, which has contributed over $118
5354 million in gifts, both large and small, to charities and
5455 organizations based in San Antonio and other cities; in 2005, his
5556 donation of $30 million to MD Anderson Cancer Center resulted in the
5657 creation of another namesake facility, the Red and Charline McCombs
5758 Institute for the Early Detection and Treatment of Cancer; and
5859 WHEREAS, This larger-than-life Texan was passionate about
5960 collecting historical items, particularly Old West artifacts,
6061 which included paintings, saddles, walking sticks, and antique
6162 firearms; he eventually amassed around 7,000 of these items and put
6263 much of his extensive collection on loan, with more than 1,000
6364 pieces currently being housed at Southwestern University; and
6465 WHEREAS, Of all the decisions he made, Mr. McCombs considered
6566 marrying his wife, Charline, to be his best, and she was his partner
6667 in life as well as philanthropy until her passing in 2019; he took
6768 immense pride in his daughters, Lynda, Marsha, and Connie, and with
6869 the passing years, his family grew to include numerous
6970 grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and
7071 WHEREAS, Red McCombs left an indelible mark on the Lone Star
7172 State through his storied entrepreneurial success and his generous
7273 efforts to benefit communities, institutions, and worthwhile
7374 causes throughout Texas, and he will be fondly remembered and
7475 greatly missed by those who had the good fortune to know him; now,
7576 therefore, be it
7677 RESOLVED, That the 88th Legislature of the State of Texas
7778 hereby pay tribute to the life of B. J. "Red" McCombs and extend
7879 deepest sympathy to the members of his family: to his daughters,
7980 Lynda McCombs, Marsha Shields and her husband, John, and Connie
8081 McNab and her husband, Sandy; to his grandchildren and
8182 great-grandchildren; and to all who mourn his passing; and, be it
8283 further
8384 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
8485 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
8586 Representatives and Senate adjourn this day, they do so in memory of
8687 Red McCombs.
