| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Violet Crown Garden Club in Austin is |

| 6 | 6 | | celebrating the 100th anniversary of its founding in 2024; and |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | WHEREAS, The Violet Crown Garden Club (VCGC) can trace its |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | origins to spring 1924, when Clara Driscoll Sevier held a meeting at |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | her home, Laguna Gloria, for those interested in community |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | beautification; the club's name was inspired by author O. Henry's |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | description of Austin as the "City of the Violet Crown," and on |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | November 10, 1928, VCGC became federated with National Garden |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | Clubs, Inc., during the first convention of Texas Garden Clubs, |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | Inc.; and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, In the decades since, VCGC has played a key role in a |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | number of garden-related community projects, including the |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | beautification of Camp Swift and Bergstrom Hospital in the 1940s, |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | the restoration of the French Legation grounds in the 1950s, and the |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | construction of the Garden Center at Zilker Botanical Gardens, |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | which opened in 1964; the organization has also supported countless |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | other preservation, planting, and maintenance efforts over the |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | years; and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Today, VCGC has more than 30 members and continues |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | to promote the love of gardening, floral design, horticulture, and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | landscaping, as well as to encourage civic and environmental |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | responsibility, through educational meetings, field trips, |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | workshops, and events such as its biannual Flower Show; moreover, |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | each year the club provides a scholarship to a college student who |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | plans to study horticulture, floriculture, or other related areas; |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | in 2022, the organization received a Lighthouse Award from |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | RecognizeGood for its record of good works; and |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, Throughout the past century, the Violet Crown Garden |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | Club has greatly contributed to the betterment of its community, |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | and it is indeed a pleasure to join in marking this significant |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | milestone in the organization's rich history; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | Legislature hereby commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Violet |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | Crown Garden Club and extend to all those associated with the |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | organization sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further |

| 40 | 40 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
