H.R. No. 1199 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, The Violet Crown Garden Club in Austin is celebrating the 100th anniversary of its founding in 2024; and WHEREAS, The Violet Crown Garden Club (VCGC) can trace its origins to spring 1924, when Clara Driscoll Sevier held a meeting at her home, Laguna Gloria, for those interested in community beautification; the club's name was inspired by author O. Henry's description of Austin as the "City of the Violet Crown," and on November 10, 1928, VCGC became federated with National Garden Clubs, Inc., during the first convention of Texas Garden Clubs, Inc.; and WHEREAS, In the decades since, VCGC has played a key role in a number of garden-related community projects, including the beautification of Camp Swift and Bergstrom Hospital in the 1940s, the restoration of the French Legation grounds in the 1950s, and the construction of the Garden Center at Zilker Botanical Gardens, which opened in 1964; the organization has also supported countless other preservation, planting, and maintenance efforts over the years; and WHEREAS, Today, VCGC has more than 30 members and continues to promote the love of gardening, floral design, horticulture, and landscaping, as well as to encourage civic and environmental responsibility, through educational meetings, field trips, workshops, and events such as its biannual Flower Show; moreover, each year the club provides a scholarship to a college student who plans to study horticulture, floriculture, or other related areas; in 2022, the organization received a Lighthouse Award from RecognizeGood for its record of good works; and WHEREAS, Throughout the past century, the Violet Crown Garden Club has greatly contributed to the betterment of its community, and it is indeed a pleasure to join in marking this significant milestone in the organization's rich history; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas Legislature hereby commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Violet Crown Garden Club and extend to all those associated with the organization sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the club as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
