44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, A life lived with joy and purpose drew to a close
66 with the passing of Mary Elizabeth White Hooten on March 24, 2023,
77 at the age of 75; and
88 WHEREAS, The daughter of Dorothy Jean Arp and O. B. White Jr.,
99 the former Mary White was born on January 6, 1948, in Bell County
1010 and grew up with the companionship of a brother, Jack; she graduated
1111 from Belton High School with the Class of 1966 and continued her
1212 education at Southwest Texas State University, where she pledged
1313 Delta Zeta and served as student council treasurer; and
1414 WHEREAS, On January 31, 1969, she married Doug Hooten, and
1515 they became the proud parents of two daughters, Lauren and Amy; with
1616 the passing years, Mrs. Hooten had the pleasure of welcoming into
1717 her treasured family three grandchildren, Noah, Angela, and Kenley;
1818 and
1919 WHEREAS, In addition to working as a special education
2020 instructor at Southwest Elementary School in Belton, Mrs. Hooten
2121 devoted herself to raising her children, driving them to and from
2222 various activities, sewing costumes for school plays, and hosting
2323 youth group gatherings; moreover, she gave back to the community as
2424 a volunteer with the Junior League; and
2525 WHEREAS, Mrs. Hooten and her husband lived in England and
2626 Richmond, Virginia, before moving to Austin to be closer to their
2727 daughters; an avid traveler, Mrs. Hooten visited locations across
2828 Europe as well as Jerusalem, Egypt, China, Russia, Peru, and
2929 Antarctica; known for her culinary skills, she earned an honorary
3030 degree from Le Cordon Bleu, and she was also a talented seamstress
3131 and embroiderer; and
3232 WHEREAS, Although Mary Hooten will be deeply missed, those
3333 who held her dear will forever remember the warmth and kindness she
3434 brought into their lives; now, therefore, be it
3535 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
3636 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Mary Elizabeth
3737 White Hooten and extend sincere sympathy to all who mourn her
3838 passing; and, be it further
3939 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4040 prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of
4141 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Mary
4242 Hooten.
