5	5	WHEREAS, Monica Muñoz Martinez has been named a Woman of the
6	6	Year by USA Today; and
7	7	WHEREAS, USA Today's Women of the Year project honors local
8	8	and national heroines who are making a positive difference in their
9	9	communities; and
10	10	WHEREAS, An associate professor of history at The University
11	11	of Texas at Austin, Monica Muñoz Martinez is a founding member of
12	12	the nonprofit organization Refusing to Forget, which brings public
13	13	attention to state-sanctioned violence against ethnic Mexicans
14	14	living along the Texas-Mexico border in the early 20th century; in
15	15	addition, she is the primary investigator for Mapping Violence:
16	16	Racial Terror in Texas 1900-1930, a digital research project that
17	17	recovers histories of racial violence, and she has served as a
18	18	historical consultant for the Smithsonian National Museum of
19	19	American History; and
20	20	WHEREAS, This esteemed educator has been selected for the
21	21	Andrew Carnegie Fellows Program, and in 2021, she was named a
22	22	MacArthur Foundation Fellow and an Organization of American
23	23	Historians Distinguished Lecturer; moreover, her book The
24	24	Injustice Never Leaves You: Anti-Mexican Violence in Texas has
25	25	received numerous accolades, and her research has been featured by
26	26	such media outlets as the New York Times, National Public Radio, and
27	27	Texas Monthly; and
28	28	WHEREAS, Dr. Martinez completed her undergraduate studies at
29	29	Brown University, and she earned a doctorate in American studies
30	30	from Yale University; and
31	31	WHEREAS, Monica Muñoz Martinez has devoted herself to
32	32	ensuring that the stories of our history are told with honesty and
33	33	are made accessible to all, and she may indeed reflect with pride on
34	34	her significant contributions as she accepts this notable honor;
35	35	now, therefore, be it
36	36	RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
37	37	Legislature hereby congratulate Monica Muñoz Martinez on being
38	38	named a Woman of the Year by USA Today and extend to her sincere best
39	39	wishes for continued success in her important work; and, be it
40	40	further
41	41	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
42	42	prepared for Dr. Martinez as an expression of high regard by the
43	43	Texas House of Representatives.
