H.R. No. 1338 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Monica Muñoz Martinez has been named a Woman of the Year by USA Today; and WHEREAS, USA Today's Women of the Year project honors local and national heroines who are making a positive difference in their communities; and WHEREAS, An associate professor of history at The University of Texas at Austin, Monica Muñoz Martinez is a founding member of the nonprofit organization Refusing to Forget, which brings public attention to state-sanctioned violence against ethnic Mexicans living along the Texas-Mexico border in the early 20th century; in addition, she is the primary investigator for Mapping Violence: Racial Terror in Texas 1900-1930, a digital research project that recovers histories of racial violence, and she has served as a historical consultant for the Smithsonian National Museum of American History; and WHEREAS, This esteemed educator has been selected for the Andrew Carnegie Fellows Program, and in 2021, she was named a MacArthur Foundation Fellow and an Organization of American Historians Distinguished Lecturer; moreover, her book The Injustice Never Leaves You: Anti-Mexican Violence in Texas has received numerous accolades, and her research has been featured by such media outlets as the New York Times, National Public Radio, and Texas Monthly; and WHEREAS, Dr. Martinez completed her undergraduate studies at Brown University, and she earned a doctorate in American studies from Yale University; and WHEREAS, Monica Muñoz Martinez has devoted herself to ensuring that the stories of our history are told with honesty and are made accessible to all, and she may indeed reflect with pride on her significant contributions as she accepts this notable honor; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Monica Muñoz Martinez on being named a Woman of the Year by USA Today and extend to her sincere best wishes for continued success in her important work; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Dr. Martinez as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
