| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, National Water Safety Month is taking place in May |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | 2023, and this month-long initiative serves as a reminder for |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | Texans to exercise caution and follow safety rules when around |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | water; and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Although many Texans seek to escape the heat during |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | the summer months at the state's many lakes, rivers, beaches, |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | swimming pools, and water parks, it is important to be aware of |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | dangers that can arise from any activity involving water; and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, Last year, 76 children in Texas died from drowning |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | accidents; drowning is the leading cause of accidental death for |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | children under the age of five, and it can occur in almost any |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | amount of water, making it imperative that children are supervised |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | at all times, whether they are indoors or outdoors; and |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, A number of organizations have joined together to |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | promote National Water Safety Month, among them the Pool & Hot Tub |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | Alliance, the American Red Cross, the National Drowning Prevention |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | Alliance, the National Recreation and Park Association, and the |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | World Waterpark Association; this coalition has worked to raise |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | awareness of ways that Americans can stay safe, which include |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | learning swimming skills, wearing life jackets, avoiding alcohol, |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | and knowing how to recognize the signs that someone is drowning; and |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, Following water safety precautions can prevent |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | accidents and save lives, and by promoting the message of Water |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | Safety Month, we can help ensure that more Texans are prepared for |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | the potential dangers that they may encounter when participating in |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | water-based activities; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | Legislature hereby recognize May 2023 as Water Safety Month. |
