 R E S O L U T I O N
 WHEREAS, National Water Safety Month is taking place in May
 2023, and this month-long initiative serves as a reminder for
 Texans to exercise caution and follow safety rules when around
 water; and
 WHEREAS, Although many Texans seek to escape the heat during
 the summer months at the state's many lakes, rivers, beaches,
 swimming pools, and water parks, it is important to be aware of
 dangers that can arise from any activity involving water; and
 WHEREAS, Last year, 76 children in Texas died from drowning
 accidents; drowning is the leading cause of accidental death for
 children under the age of five, and it can occur in almost any
 amount of water, making it imperative that children are supervised
 at all times, whether they are indoors or outdoors; and
 WHEREAS, A number of organizations have joined together to
 promote National Water Safety Month, among them the Pool & Hot Tub
 Alliance, the American Red Cross, the National Drowning Prevention
 Alliance, the National Recreation and Park Association, and the
 World Waterpark Association; this coalition has worked to raise
 awareness of ways that Americans can stay safe, which include
 learning swimming skills, wearing life jackets, avoiding alcohol,
 and knowing how to recognize the signs that someone is drowning; and
 WHEREAS, Following water safety precautions can prevent
 accidents and save lives, and by promoting the message of Water
 Safety Month, we can help ensure that more Texans are prepared for
 the potential dangers that they may encounter when participating in
 water-based activities; now, therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
 Legislature hereby recognize May 2023 as Water Safety Month.
