5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Residents of Wise County are visiting Austin on |

6 | 6 | | March 7, 2023, to celebrate Wise County Day at the State Capitol; |
---|
7 | 7 | | and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Located in the northwestern part of the state, Wise |
---|
9 | 9 | | County was established on January 23, 1856; the county was carved |
---|
10 | 10 | | out of Cooke County by legislative act and named in honor of Henry |
---|
11 | 11 | | A. Wise, a U.S. congressman from Virginia who had supported the |
---|
12 | 12 | | annexation of Texas; at the same time as it created Wise County, the |
---|
13 | 13 | | legislature decreed that its county seat be established within five |
---|
14 | 14 | | miles of the county's center, and two years later that new community |
---|
15 | 15 | | became known as Decatur, after the naval hero Stephen Decatur; and |
---|
16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, The eastern fork of the Chisholm Trail passed near |
---|
17 | 17 | | Decatur during the latter half of the 19th century, and the town |
---|
18 | 18 | | prospered as a shipping point and market for local farmers; today, |
---|
19 | 19 | | it is a center for natural gas production, specialty carbon and |
---|
20 | 20 | | graphite manufacturing, and health care, as well as marketing and |
---|
21 | 21 | | processing for area agribusiness; and |
---|
22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Decatur is also home to some of the best |
---|
23 | 23 | | professional rodeo cowboys and bull riders in the world; the many |
---|
24 | 24 | | champions who have lived or trained in the community include one of |
---|
25 | 25 | | the most decorated rodeo cowboys of all time, Trevor Brazile, as |
---|
26 | 26 | | well as Tuf Cooper and Texas Rodeo Hall of Famer Roy Cooper, both of |
---|
27 | 27 | | the famed Cooper family; and |
---|
28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Visitors to Wise County are drawn by such historic |
---|
29 | 29 | | attractions as the Waggoner Mansion, the Wise County Heritage |
---|
30 | 30 | | Museum, the Wise County Veterans Park, and the pink granite Wise |
---|
31 | 31 | | County Courthouse, which was completed in 1896; the county also |
---|
32 | 32 | | offers a variety of recreational opportunities at Lake Bridgeport, |
---|
33 | 33 | | Eagle Mountain Lake, and the Caddo-Lyndon B. Johnson National |
---|
34 | 34 | | Grasslands; in addition, area residents commemorate their heritage |
---|
35 | 35 | | with the annual Butterfield Stage Days Festival in May, the Wise |
---|
36 | 36 | | County Old Settlers Reunion in July, and the Chisholm Trail Days and |
---|
37 | 37 | | Western Heritage Festival in August; and |
---|
38 | 38 | | WHEREAS, Celebrating their history as they embrace the |
---|
39 | 39 | | opportunities of the future, the citizens of Wise County take great |
---|
40 | 40 | | pride in their community, and it is indeed fitting to honor their |
---|
41 | 41 | | unique contributions to the story of the Lone Star State; now, |
---|
42 | 42 | | therefore, be it |

43 | 43 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
---|
44 | 44 | | Legislature hereby recognize March 7, 2023, as Wise County Day at |
---|
45 | 45 | | the State Capitol and extend a warm welcome to the visiting |
---|
46 | 46 | | delegation. |
