| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Karen McCormick Zachary is retiring from the Dallas |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | Independent School District on May 26, 2023, drawing to a close an |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | exemplary career with the district that has spanned nearly four |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | decades; and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Mrs. Zachary graduated from St. Mary's Academy in |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | her hometown of New Orleans before enrolling at Prairie View A&M |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | University on an academic scholarship and receiving a bachelor's |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | degree in elementary education and teaching with magna cum laude |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | honors in 1984; she subsequently returned to New Orleans to teach |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | elementary school for two years and then moved to Dallas, where she |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | was hired at Leila P. Cowart Elementary School; and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, While teaching in Dallas for six years, Mrs. Zachary |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | earned a master's degree in counseling education from Texas A&M |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | University-Commerce; in 1992, she secured a new position as a |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | school counselor, and she went on to serve in that role at both |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | Birdie Alexander and Umphrey Lee Elementary Schools over the course |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | of three decades; along the way, she has led or assisted staff and |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | students with Destination Imagination competitions, annual Career |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | Day presentations, state testing preparation, and child advocacy |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | resourcing, in addition to enthusiastically supporting her |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | schools' basketball and track teams; and |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, In recognition of her dedicated service to the |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | district, Mrs. Zachary was named the Outstanding Elementary School |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | Counselor of the Southwest Community in 2009 and the Dallas ISD |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | Elementary School Counselor of the Year in 2022; outside of her |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | professional life, she has served Omicron Mu Omega Chapter of Alpha |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., as a member of numerous committees; she |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | is also a longtime parishioner and lector at Holy Spirit Catholic |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | Church in Duncanville; and |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | WHEREAS, In all her endeavors, Mrs. Zachary has enjoyed the |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | love and support of her husband, Mance Zachary, and their sons, |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | Kendall and Terrance Zachary, and she has been further blessed with |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | a grandson, Mance Dennis Zachary; and |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | WHEREAS, Through her dedication, professionalism, and |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | commitment to excellence, Karen Zachary has made a positive |
|---|
| 40 | 40 | | difference in the lives of countless young Texans, and she may |
|---|
| 41 | 41 | | indeed reflect with pride on a career well spent; now, therefore, be |
|---|
| 42 | 42 | | it |
|---|
| 43 | 43 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
|---|
| 44 | 44 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Karen McCormick Zachary on her |
|---|
| 45 | 45 | | retirement from Dallas ISD and extend to her sincere best wishes for |
|---|
| 46 | 46 | | the future; and, be it further |
