H.R. No. 1489 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Karen McCormick Zachary is retiring from the Dallas Independent School District on May 26, 2023, drawing to a close an exemplary career with the district that has spanned nearly four decades; and WHEREAS, Mrs. Zachary graduated from St. Mary's Academy in her hometown of New Orleans before enrolling at Prairie View A&M University on an academic scholarship and receiving a bachelor's degree in elementary education and teaching with magna cum laude honors in 1984; she subsequently returned to New Orleans to teach elementary school for two years and then moved to Dallas, where she was hired at Leila P. Cowart Elementary School; and WHEREAS, While teaching in Dallas for six years, Mrs. Zachary earned a master's degree in counseling education from Texas A&M University-Commerce; in 1992, she secured a new position as a school counselor, and she went on to serve in that role at both Birdie Alexander and Umphrey Lee Elementary Schools over the course of three decades; along the way, she has led or assisted staff and students with Destination Imagination competitions, annual Career Day presentations, state testing preparation, and child advocacy resourcing, in addition to enthusiastically supporting her schools' basketball and track teams; and WHEREAS, In recognition of her dedicated service to the district, Mrs. Zachary was named the Outstanding Elementary School Counselor of the Southwest Community in 2009 and the Dallas ISD Elementary School Counselor of the Year in 2022; outside of her professional life, she has served Omicron Mu Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., as a member of numerous committees; she is also a longtime parishioner and lector at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Duncanville; and WHEREAS, In all her endeavors, Mrs. Zachary has enjoyed the love and support of her husband, Mance Zachary, and their sons, Kendall and Terrance Zachary, and she has been further blessed with a grandson, Mance Dennis Zachary; and WHEREAS, Through her dedication, professionalism, and commitment to excellence, Karen Zachary has made a positive difference in the lives of countless young Texans, and she may indeed reflect with pride on a career well spent; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Karen McCormick Zachary on her retirement from Dallas ISD and extend to her sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mrs. Zachary as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
