H.R. No. 1735 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Catherine Shen of the Bellaire High School tennis team reached the pinnacle of success by winning the 6A girls' singles championship at the 2023 University Interscholastic League Tennis State Tournament; and WHEREAS, Joining the other top high school players in Texas on April 25 and 26 in San Antonio, Ms. Shen delivered an exceptional performance; after a straight-sets quarterfinals decision over Ahona Chowdhury from The Woodlands High School, she prevailed in the semifinals against Chloe Zhang from Westlake High School in a another two-set contest, 6-3, 7-6(4); and WHEREAS, In the 6A state championship match, Ms. Shen took the court against Ananya Sriniketh of Katy Tompkins High School; demonstrating an unwavering resolve, she triumphed 6-1, 6-2 to claim the coveted state title; and WHEREAS, With the victory, Ms. Shen became the first student from the Houston Independent School District to win a tennis state crown since 1990; a freshman at DeBakey High School for Health Professions, she competes with the tennis team at Bellaire High and is poised for further athletic success in the years ahead; she is looking forward to studying law and medicine in college; and WHEREAS, By excelling in the state's premier showcase for high school tennis players, Catherine Shen has become a source of great pride for her classmates and community, and she will cherish her memories of this outstanding accomplishment for years to come; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Catherine Shen on winning the 2023 UIL 6A girls' singles tennis state championship and extend to her sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Ms. Shen as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
