44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, Charles Emmett Cheever Jr. of San Antonio, an
66 esteemed Texan and friend to many, passed away on October 29, 2021,
77 at the age of 93; and
88 WHEREAS, The son of Charles E. Cheever Sr. and Elizabeth
99 Daley Cheever, Charlie Cheever was born on May 17, 1928, on an army
1010 base in Manila, Philippines; he graduated from the U.S. Military
1111 Academy at West Point in 1949 and went on to serve as a pilot
1212 instructor in the U.S. Air Force and as a lieutenant colonel in the
1313 Air Force Reserve; in 1957, he graduated from The University of
1414 Texas School of Law; and
1515 WHEREAS, Mr. Cheever subsequently joined his father at
1616 Broadway Bank, first serving as vice president and later as
1717 president and as chairman and CEO; following his retirement in
1818 2005, he was named chairman emeritus; over the course of his career,
1919 he guided the bank through an economic recession and played an
2020 instrumental role in a number of innovations that helped the
2121 institution to become the largest independently owned bank in San
2222 Antonio; and
2323 WHEREAS, Active in his community, Mr. Cheever held
2424 leadership positions with a number of civic and professional
2525 organizations, including the San Fernando Cathedral Restoration
2626 Project, the Challenger Learning Center at San Antonio College, the
2727 Texas Bankers Association, and the Bexar County Hospital District;
2828 additionally, he was a founding co-chair of the San Antonio
2929 Education Partnership and trustee emeritus of the University of the
3030 Incarnate Word; and
3131 WHEREAS, Mr. Cheever and his first wife, Sally, shared more
3232 than five decades together before her passing; fortunate enough to
3333 find love again, he wed Nancy Jones Shary in 2005; the devoted
3434 father of 6 children, Suzanne, Cece, Jean, Joan, Charlie, and
3535 Christopher, he later welcomed into his family 9 grandchildren,
3636 Sara, Carrie, Cy, Kate, Daley, Austin, Helen, Hope, and Emmett, and
3737 10 great-grandchildren; a man of deep faith, he was a valued
3838 congregant of St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church; and
3939 WHEREAS, Charlie Cheever lived a life that was rich in
4040 personal and professional achievements, and he will forever be a
4141 source of inspiration to those he leaves behind; now, therefore, be
4242 it
4343 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
4444 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Charles Emmett
4545 Cheever Jr. and extend sincere condolences to all who mourn his
4646 passing; and, be it further
4747 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4848 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
4949 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Charlie
5050 Cheever.
