5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Charles Emmett Cheever Jr. of San Antonio, an |

6 | 6 | | esteemed Texan and friend to many, passed away on October 29, 2021, |
---|
7 | 7 | | at the age of 93; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, The son of Charles E. Cheever Sr. and Elizabeth |
---|
9 | 9 | | Daley Cheever, Charlie Cheever was born on May 17, 1928, on an army |
---|
10 | 10 | | base in Manila, Philippines; he graduated from the U.S. Military |
---|
11 | 11 | | Academy at West Point in 1949 and went on to serve as a pilot |
---|
12 | 12 | | instructor in the U.S. Air Force and as a lieutenant colonel in the |
---|
13 | 13 | | Air Force Reserve; in 1957, he graduated from The University of |
---|
14 | 14 | | Texas School of Law; and |
---|
15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Cheever subsequently joined his father at |
---|
16 | 16 | | Broadway Bank, first serving as vice president and later as |
---|
17 | 17 | | president and as chairman and CEO; following his retirement in |
---|
18 | 18 | | 2005, he was named chairman emeritus; over the course of his career, |
---|
19 | 19 | | he guided the bank through an economic recession and played an |
---|
20 | 20 | | instrumental role in a number of innovations that helped the |
---|
21 | 21 | | institution to become the largest independently owned bank in San |
---|
22 | 22 | | Antonio; and |
---|
23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Active in his community, Mr. Cheever held |
---|
24 | 24 | | leadership positions with a number of civic and professional |
---|
25 | 25 | | organizations, including the San Fernando Cathedral Restoration |
---|
26 | 26 | | Project, the Challenger Learning Center at San Antonio College, the |
---|
27 | 27 | | Texas Bankers Association, and the Bexar County Hospital District; |
---|
28 | 28 | | additionally, he was a founding co-chair of the San Antonio |
---|
29 | 29 | | Education Partnership and trustee emeritus of the University of the |
---|
30 | 30 | | Incarnate Word; and |
---|
31 | 31 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Cheever and his first wife, Sally, shared more |
---|
32 | 32 | | than five decades together before her passing; fortunate enough to |
---|
33 | 33 | | find love again, he wed Nancy Jones Shary in 2005; the devoted |
---|
34 | 34 | | father of 6 children, Suzanne, Cece, Jean, Joan, Charlie, and |
---|
35 | 35 | | Christopher, he later welcomed into his family 9 grandchildren, |
---|
36 | 36 | | Sara, Carrie, Cy, Kate, Daley, Austin, Helen, Hope, and Emmett, and |
---|
37 | 37 | | 10 great-grandchildren; a man of deep faith, he was a valued |
---|
38 | 38 | | congregant of St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church; and |
---|
39 | 39 | | WHEREAS, Charlie Cheever lived a life that was rich in |
---|
40 | 40 | | personal and professional achievements, and he will forever be a |
---|
41 | 41 | | source of inspiration to those he leaves behind; now, therefore, be |
---|
42 | 42 | | it |

43 | 43 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
---|
44 | 44 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Charles Emmett |
---|
45 | 45 | | Cheever Jr. and extend sincere condolences to all who mourn his |
---|
46 | 46 | | passing; and, be it further |
---|
47 | 47 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |

48 | 48 | | prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of |

49 | 49 | | Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Charlie |
