H.R. No. 186 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Charles Emmett Cheever Jr. of San Antonio, an esteemed Texan and friend to many, passed away on October 29, 2021, at the age of 93; and WHEREAS, The son of Charles E. Cheever Sr. and Elizabeth Daley Cheever, Charlie Cheever was born on May 17, 1928, on an army base in Manila, Philippines; he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1949 and went on to serve as a pilot instructor in the U.S. Air Force and as a lieutenant colonel in the Air Force Reserve; in 1957, he graduated from The University of Texas School of Law; and WHEREAS, Mr. Cheever subsequently joined his father at Broadway Bank, first serving as vice president and later as president and as chairman and CEO; following his retirement in 2005, he was named chairman emeritus; over the course of his career, he guided the bank through an economic recession and played an instrumental role in a number of innovations that helped the institution to become the largest independently owned bank in San Antonio; and WHEREAS, Active in his community, Mr. Cheever held leadership positions with a number of civic and professional organizations, including the San Fernando Cathedral Restoration Project, the Challenger Learning Center at San Antonio College, the Texas Bankers Association, and the Bexar County Hospital District; additionally, he was a founding co-chair of the San Antonio Education Partnership and trustee emeritus of the University of the Incarnate Word; and WHEREAS, Mr. Cheever and his first wife, Sally, shared more than five decades together before her passing; fortunate enough to find love again, he wed Nancy Jones Shary in 2005; the devoted father of 6 children, Suzanne, Cece, Jean, Joan, Charlie, and Christopher, he later welcomed into his family 9 grandchildren, Sara, Carrie, Cy, Kate, Daley, Austin, Helen, Hope, and Emmett, and 10 great-grandchildren; a man of deep faith, he was a valued congregant of St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church; and WHEREAS, Charlie Cheever lived a life that was rich in personal and professional achievements, and he will forever be a source of inspiration to those he leaves behind; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Charles Emmett Cheever Jr. and extend sincere condolences to all who mourn his passing; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Charlie Cheever.
