H.R. No. 1952
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Debate students from Panhandle High School have
distinguished themselves through their participation in the 2023
University Interscholastic League 2A Cross-Examination Debate
State Meet; and
WHEREAS, Guided by their sponsor, Sheryl Oliver, the
Panhandle debate team of Kelby Olsen and Andrew Menefee received
the gold medal and the team of McCade Smith and Gemma Garrett
received the silver in the UIL district contest; advancing to
state, the Panhandle students faced off against other top debate
students from across Texas at The University of Texas at Austin on
March 13 and 14, 2023; during the competition, Mr. Olsen and
Mr. Menefee won four rounds in the preliminaries before earning
bronze medals in the semifinals; and
WHEREAS, By taking part in the Cross-Examination Debate State
Meet, these bright young Texans have ably represented their school
and community, and the dedication they have demonstrated is sure to
serve them well in the years ahead; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
Legislature hereby commend Kelby Olsen, Andrew Menefee, McCade
Smith, and Gemma Garrett on their performance in the UIL 2A
Cross-Examination Debate State Meet and extend to them sincere best
wishes for the future; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That official copies of this resolution be prepared
for the students as an expression of high regard by the Texas House
of Representatives.
