| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Good Neighbor Settlement House is celebrating its |

| 6 | 6 | | 70th anniversary in 2023, and this occasion offers a welcome |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | opportunity to reflect on the organization's vital work in behalf |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | of the Brownsville community; and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Good Neighbor Settlement House traces its origins to |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | February 6, 1953, when a group of women affiliated with the First |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | United Methodist Church established the organization to provide |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | support services to residents of the Buena Vida neighborhood; over |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | the years, the organization has expanded its efforts to address |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | hunger and homelessness throughout Brownsville, and its many |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | initiatives include a soup kitchen, a respite program, a food bank, |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | a hygiene program, and medical services; and |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Today, Good Neighbor Settlement House benefits from |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | the able leadership of executive director Astrid Dominguez and |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | president of the board Daniel Elkin, as well as from the outstanding |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | efforts of its staff, board members, and volunteers; and |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Over the past seven decades, Good Neighbor |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | Settlement House has made a meaningful difference in the lives of |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | countless area residents in need, and the organization is truly |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | deserving of recognition on this important milestone in its |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | history; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | Legislature hereby commemorate the 70th anniversary of Good |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | Neighbor Settlement House and extend to all those associated with |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | the organization sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it |
|---|
