H.R. No. 2021 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Good Neighbor Settlement House is celebrating its 70th anniversary in 2023, and this occasion offers a welcome opportunity to reflect on the organization's vital work in behalf of the Brownsville community; and WHEREAS, Good Neighbor Settlement House traces its origins to February 6, 1953, when a group of women affiliated with the First United Methodist Church established the organization to provide support services to residents of the Buena Vida neighborhood; over the years, the organization has expanded its efforts to address hunger and homelessness throughout Brownsville, and its many initiatives include a soup kitchen, a respite program, a food bank, a hygiene program, and medical services; and WHEREAS, Today, Good Neighbor Settlement House benefits from the able leadership of executive director Astrid Dominguez and president of the board Daniel Elkin, as well as from the outstanding efforts of its staff, board members, and volunteers; and WHEREAS, Over the past seven decades, Good Neighbor Settlement House has made a meaningful difference in the lives of countless area residents in need, and the organization is truly deserving of recognition on this important milestone in its history; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas Legislature hereby commemorate the 70th anniversary of Good Neighbor Settlement House and extend to all those associated with the organization sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Good Neighbor Settlement House as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
