5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Honorable Hilda Gloria Tagle retired as senior |

6 | 6 | | judge of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas |
---|
7 | 7 | | in 2021, drawing to a close a pioneering career in the law that |
---|
8 | 8 | | spanned more than four decades; and |
---|
9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, The daughter of Manuel and Dolores Cipriano Tagle, |
---|
10 | 10 | | Hilda Tagle was born in Corpus Christi in 1946 and grew up in |
---|
11 | 11 | | Robstown; she earned her associate's degree from Del Mar College in |
---|
12 | 12 | | 1967, her bachelor's degree from East Texas State University in |
---|
13 | 13 | | 1969, and her master's degree in library science from North Texas |
---|
14 | 14 | | State University in 1971; and |
---|
15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, While working as a librarian at Strake Jesuit |
---|
16 | 16 | | College Preparatory School in Houston, Judge Tagle enrolled in The |
---|
17 | 17 | | University of Texas School of Law, and she graduated in 1977; she |
---|
18 | 18 | | began her legal career as an assistant city attorney in Corpus |
---|
19 | 19 | | Christi and as an assistant county attorney in Nueces County, and in |
---|
20 | 20 | | 1980 she was recruited by the Nueces County district attorney to |
---|
21 | 21 | | prosecute felonies; she then entered private practice for a time, |
---|
22 | 22 | | while also teaching at Del Mar College; and |
---|
23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, In 1985, Judge Tagle was appointed to Nueces County |
---|
24 | 24 | | Court at Law No. 3, making her the first Hispanic woman to serve as |
---|
25 | 25 | | a judge in Nueces County, the first Hispanic woman to serve on a |
---|
26 | 26 | | county court at law in Texas, and the second Hispanic woman to serve |
---|
27 | 27 | | as judge of a court of record in the history of Texas; she was |
---|
28 | 28 | | elected judge of the 148th District Court in Corpus Christi in 1994, |
---|
29 | 29 | | and in 1997 she was nominated by President Bill Clinton to the U.S. |
---|
30 | 30 | | District Court; confirmed by the U.S. Senate the following year, |
---|
31 | 31 | | she became the first Hispanic woman to serve as a U.S. District |
---|
32 | 32 | | Court judge in Texas, and on December 31, 2012, she became the |
---|
33 | 33 | | court's senior judge; and |
---|
34 | 34 | | WHEREAS, Judge Tagle's dedication, expertise, and commitment |
---|
35 | 35 | | to the law have greatly benefited the citizens of Texas and earned |
---|
36 | 36 | | her the respect and admiration of her fellow jurists, and she may |
---|
37 | 37 | | indeed reflect with pride on a career well spent as she embarks on |
---|
38 | 38 | | the next exciting chapter of her life; now, therefore, be it |
---|
39 | 39 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
---|
40 | 40 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Hilda Gloria Tagle on her |
---|
41 | 41 | | retirement as senior judge of the U.S. District Court for the |
---|
42 | 42 | | Southern District of Texas and extend to her sincere best wishes for |
---|
43 | 43 | | the future; and, be it further |
---|
44 | 44 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |

45 | 45 | | prepared for Judge Tagle as an expression of high regard by the |
