44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, The Honorable Hilda Gloria Tagle retired as senior
66 judge of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas
77 in 2021, drawing to a close a pioneering career in the law that
88 spanned more than four decades; and
99 WHEREAS, The daughter of Manuel and Dolores Cipriano Tagle,
1010 Hilda Tagle was born in Corpus Christi in 1946 and grew up in
1111 Robstown; she earned her associate's degree from Del Mar College in
1212 1967, her bachelor's degree from East Texas State University in
1313 1969, and her master's degree in library science from North Texas
1414 State University in 1971; and
1515 WHEREAS, While working as a librarian at Strake Jesuit
1616 College Preparatory School in Houston, Judge Tagle enrolled in The
1717 University of Texas School of Law, and she graduated in 1977; she
1818 began her legal career as an assistant city attorney in Corpus
1919 Christi and as an assistant county attorney in Nueces County, and in
2020 1980 she was recruited by the Nueces County district attorney to
2121 prosecute felonies; she then entered private practice for a time,
2222 while also teaching at Del Mar College; and
2323 WHEREAS, In 1985, Judge Tagle was appointed to Nueces County
2424 Court at Law No. 3, making her the first Hispanic woman to serve as
2525 a judge in Nueces County, the first Hispanic woman to serve on a
2626 county court at law in Texas, and the second Hispanic woman to serve
2727 as judge of a court of record in the history of Texas; she was
2828 elected judge of the 148th District Court in Corpus Christi in 1994,
2929 and in 1997 she was nominated by President Bill Clinton to the U.S.
3030 District Court; confirmed by the U.S. Senate the following year,
3131 she became the first Hispanic woman to serve as a U.S. District
3232 Court judge in Texas, and on December 31, 2012, she became the
3333 court's senior judge; and
3434 WHEREAS, Judge Tagle's dedication, expertise, and commitment
3535 to the law have greatly benefited the citizens of Texas and earned
3636 her the respect and admiration of her fellow jurists, and she may
3737 indeed reflect with pride on a career well spent as she embarks on
3838 the next exciting chapter of her life; now, therefore, be it
3939 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
4040 Legislature hereby congratulate Hilda Gloria Tagle on her
4141 retirement as senior judge of the U.S. District Court for the
4242 Southern District of Texas and extend to her sincere best wishes for
4343 the future; and, be it further
4444 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4545 prepared for Judge Tagle as an expression of high regard by the
4646 Texas House of Representatives.
