5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, A life lived with joy and purpose drew to a close |

6 | 6 | | with the passing of Essie Beatrice Thomas Martin on May 7, 2023, at |

7 | 7 | | the age of 100; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, The daughter of Fannie and Sim Thomas, the former |
---|
9 | 9 | | Essie Thomas was born in Jonesville, Louisiana, on June 1, 1922, and |
---|
10 | 10 | | grew up with eight brothers and sisters; she earned a bachelor's |
---|
11 | 11 | | degree in education from Grambling University and joined her |
---|
12 | 12 | | siblings in Oakland, California; on April 20, 1946, she returned to |
---|
13 | 13 | | Louisiana to marry her hometown sweetheart, Theodule "TD" Martin, |
---|
14 | 14 | | and they were blessed with two children, Theodule "Dell" and |
---|
15 | 15 | | Doeveal; and |
---|
16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, The Martins lived in Archie, Louisiana, and Denver, |
---|
17 | 17 | | Colorado, before settling in Basile, Louisiana, where Mrs. Martin |
---|
18 | 18 | | taught sixth grade at William W. Stewart High School; the family |
---|
19 | 19 | | relocated to California in 1969, and she became a counselor at |
---|
20 | 20 | | Antelope Valley High School; she ultimately retired from Palmdale |
---|
21 | 21 | | High School, and she and her husband enjoyed extensive travel and |
---|
22 | 22 | | undertook especially memorable trips to the Caribbean, Paris, and |
---|
23 | 23 | | Spain; active in her community, she was a co-founder of the Antelope |
---|
24 | 24 | | Valley Juliettes and supported her former students in their |
---|
25 | 25 | | endeavors; she was a woman of strong faith and a valued member of |
---|
26 | 26 | | Growing Valley Church and, later, Agape Community Church; and |
---|
27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, Mrs. Martin was the devoted grandmother of Jamila |
---|
28 | 28 | | Nightingale and Angel Martin; she and her husband shared a |
---|
29 | 29 | | fulfilling relationship until his passing, and she then resided |
---|
30 | 30 | | with her son's family and with a granddaughter before staying in |
---|
31 | 31 | | Garland under the care of her great-niece, Cora C. McClendon, and |
---|
32 | 32 | | her daughter, Aisha J. McClendon; warm and caring, she kept in touch |
---|
33 | 33 | | with family members all around the world; and |
---|
34 | 34 | | WHEREAS, Although Essie Martin is deeply missed, she has left |
---|
35 | 35 | | her loved ones with many cherished memories, and she will forever |
---|
36 | 36 | | hold a special place in their hearts; now, therefore, be it |
---|
37 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |

38 | 38 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Essie Beatrice Thomas |

39 | 39 | | Martin and extend sincere sympathy to the members of her family: to |

40 | 40 | | her son, Theodule "Dell" Martin, and his wife, Linda |

41 | 41 | | Jacobus-Martin; to her granddaughters, Jamila Nightingale and her |
