5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Texas LGBTQ community lost one of its giants |
---|
6 | 6 | | with the death of civil rights attorney Donald J. Maison of Dallas |
---|
7 | 7 | | on February 21, 2022, at the age of 74; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, The son of Donald J. Maison Sr. and Lucille Crevier |
---|
9 | 9 | | Maison, Don Maison was born in Mt. Clemens, Michigan, on May 18, |
---|
10 | 10 | | 1947; he graduated from The University of Texas at Arlington and |
---|
11 | 11 | | St. Mary's University School of Law, and his passion for social |
---|
12 | 12 | | justice drove his career; in the wake of raids on gay clubs, he |
---|
13 | 13 | | pursued litigation that sparked change in the Dallas Police |
---|
14 | 14 | | Department; he successfully sued Parkland Memorial Hospital in |
---|
15 | 15 | | behalf of AIDS patients struggling to access treatment, and his |
---|
16 | 16 | | victories further included a lengthy class action discrimination |
---|
17 | 17 | | suit against Southwest Airlines; after becoming president and CEO |
---|
18 | 18 | | of AIDS Services of Dallas in 1988, he overcame many challenges to |
---|
19 | 19 | | transform the organization into a national model, which today |
---|
20 | 20 | | provides housing and support services for low-income men, women, |
---|
21 | 21 | | and children living with or impacted by HIV/AIDS; his remarkable |
---|
22 | 22 | | tenure spanned 32 years until his retirement; and |
---|
23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Maison gave generously of his time and expertise |
---|
24 | 24 | | in such leadership roles as co-chair of the National AIDS Housing |
---|
25 | 25 | | Coalition, director for the Texas AIDS Network, and member of the |
---|
26 | 26 | | Dallas EMA Health Services Planning Council, the National AIDS |
---|
27 | 27 | | Communications Roundtable, and the Dallas Homeless Consortium; |
---|
28 | 28 | | long involved in Democratic politics, he helped move the state and |
---|
29 | 29 | | local party in a more progressive direction and served as a precinct |
---|
30 | 30 | | chair, election judge, and member of the state executive committee; |
---|
31 | 31 | | in his leisure time, he was an avid world traveler, forming many |
---|
32 | 32 | | lasting friendships while exploring local cultures and availing |
---|
33 | 33 | | himself of public transportation; and |
---|
34 | 34 | | WHEREAS, Through his exceptional contributions, Don Maison |
---|
35 | 35 | | made a profound difference in countless lives, and he will be |
---|
36 | 36 | | remembered with deep admiration and affection by all who were |
---|
37 | 37 | | privileged to know him; now, therefore, be it |
---|
38 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
---|
39 | 39 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Donald J. Maison |
---|
40 | 40 | | and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his |
---|
41 | 41 | | partner, Richmond Morris; to his sisters, Joan Maison Dopp, Lisa |
---|
42 | 42 | | Maison Ceunick, and Kathleen Maison Cohen; and to his other |

43 | 43 | | relatives and many friends; and, be it further |

44 | 44 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
