| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Sons of the Republic of Texas (SRT) is hosting a |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | Texas Independence Day ceremony on March 2, 2023, in celebration of |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | the 187th anniversary of the birth of the Republic of Texas; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, In the midst of the Texas Revolution, 59 delegates |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | signed the Texas Declaration of Independence on March 2, 1836, at |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | Washington-on-the-Brazos, officially declaring Texas a free and |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | independent nation and severing their political connection with the |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | Mexican government; at the same time, the defenders of the Alamo |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | were under siege by the Mexican Army led by General Antonio López de |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | Santa Anna, and despite the many casualties at the Alamo and the |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | advancing army, Texas patriots continued to fight for the next |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | seven weeks, until their victory over Santa Anna at San Jacinto on |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | April 21, 1836, effectively solidified the freedom of the Republic |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | of Texas; and |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Originally established in 1893 by several sons and |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | grandsons of veterans of the Texas Revolution, the SRT was |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | officially incorporated as a nonprofit corporation under Texas law |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | on October 20, 1934, and consists of members who are direct |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | descendants of a resident of the Republic of Texas; in the decades |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | since its incorporation, the organization has sought to perpetuate |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | the memory and spirit of the men and women who achieved the |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | independence of Texas and eventually secured its admission as a |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | state of the United States of America; and |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, The 2023 Texas Independence Day ceremony is taking |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | place at Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site and will |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | feature remarks by keynote speaker Dr. Bill O'Neal, a former Texas |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | state historian; and |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, Since its inception, the Sons of the Republic of |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | Texas has played a vital role in preserving and promoting the rich |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | heritage of the Lone Star State, and its members may indeed take |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | great pride in their contributions; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | Legislature hereby commemorate the 2023 Texas Independence Day |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | ceremony hosted by the Sons of the Republic of Texas and extend to |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | all those in attendance sincere best wishes for a meaningful and |
|---|
| 40 | 40 | | memorable event; and, be it further |
|---|
| 41 | 41 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|---|
| 42 | 42 | | prepared for the Sons of the Republic of Texas as an expression of |
|---|
| 43 | 43 | | high regard by the Texas House of Representatives. |
