5	5	WHEREAS, Dr. Marcelo Cavazos is retiring as superintendent
6	6	of the Arlington Independent School District on August 31, 2023,
7	7	drawing to a close more than two decades of distinguished service to
8	8	the district; and
9	9	WHEREAS, Dr. Cavazos first joined Arlington ISD in 1999 as
10	10	the associate superintendent for instruction; after serving as
11	11	deputy superintendent for three years, he was named superintendent
12	12	of schools in 2012; over the course of his tenure, he has become
13	13	known for his frequent visits to classrooms throughout the
14	14	district, offering encouragement and support to students and
15	15	faculty alike; he often shares his philosophy that "education is
16	16	the great equalizer," asserting that the barriers of poverty and
17	17	historic inequality can be overcome through good schools;
18	18	furthermore, his annual State of the District address has been a
19	19	do-not-miss event in Arlington as he explains the importance of
20	20	public education and furthers community engagement with local
21	21	schools; and
22	22	WHEREAS, During his time as superintendent, Dr. Cavazos has
23	23	overseen the successful passage of two major bond measures, one in
24	24	2014 and another in 2019, that totaled $1.6 billion, and he has also
25	25	helped develop numerous specialized academies focusing on early
26	26	college education, fine arts and dual language, STEM, leadership
27	27	development, and career and technical education; additionally,
28	28	Arlington ISD created the nation's first districtwide STEM
29	29	curriculum for four-year-olds; Dr. Cavazos's leadership proved
30	30	especially valuable during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, when
31	31	the district provided students with meals as well as more than
32	32	20,000 pieces of technology for online learning; and
33	33	WHEREAS, This esteemed administrator has accrued numerous
34	34	awards and honors in recognition of his accomplishments, and in
35	35	2016, he was named Texas Superintendent of the Year; furthermore,
36	36	he was the Texas nominee for the 2017 AASA Superintendent of the
37	37	Year Award; and
38	38	WHEREAS, Dr. Cavazos holds bachelor's and master's degrees
39	39	from The University of Texas-Pan American, and he earned his
40	40	doctoral degree from The University of Texas at Austin; he began his
41	41	career in 1990 as an English teacher in the Mission Consolidated
42	42	Independent School District, and he went on to serve in various
43	43	positions at multiple school districts in Texas, including McAllen
44	44	ISD, Mercedes ISD, and San Benito Consolidated ISD; prior to
45	45	joining the Arlington district, he worked at the Texas Education
46	46	Agency Department of School Finance and Support; and
47	47	WHEREAS, Through his dedication, expertise, and commitment
48	48	to excellence, Marcelo Cavazos has helped countless young Texans
49	49	acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed, and his
50	50	contributions will be remembered and appreciated for years to come;
51	51	now, therefore, be it
52	52	RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
53	53	Legislature hereby congratulate Dr. Marcelo Cavazos on his
54	54	retirement as superintendent of Arlington ISD and extend to him
55	55	sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further
56	56	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
57	57	prepared for Dr. Cavazos as an expression of high regard by the
58	58	Texas House of Representatives.
