44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, A full and generous life drew to a close with the
66 passing of Joyce Mae Bright Swearingen of Nacogdoches on
77 December 25, 2022, at the age of 98; and
88 WHEREAS, The daughter of George Novel and Dovie Mae Bright,
99 the former Joyce Bright was born in Nacogdoches on February 4, 1924,
1010 and she grew up with the companionship of two brothers, N. G. and
1111 Charles; she attended Nacogdoches High School, and in 1943, she
1212 graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University, where she met
1313 the love of her life, James Douglas Swearingen; the couple
1414 exchanged wedding vows on January 10, 1946, one month after he
1515 returned home from World War II, and they went on to share nearly
1616 seven decades of marriage before his passing in 2012; and
1717 WHEREAS, In the late 1940s, Mrs. Swearingen embarked on a
1818 long and rewarding career managing Swearingen Office Equipment and
1919 Nacogdoches Credit Bureau alongside her husband; following the sale
2020 of the credit bureau in 1969, she began working at the Fredonia
2121 State Bank and would eventually retire as vice president, the first
2222 woman in the bank's history to hold the position; active in her
2323 professional community, she joined the East Texas Group of the
2424 National Association of Bank Women and was later inducted into the
2525 association's hall of fame for her work in finance; and
2626 WHEREAS, A pillar of the Nacogdoches community,
2727 Mrs. Swearingen gave generously of her time and talents to a number
2828 of clubs and civic organizations throughout her life, including
2929 United Way, the newcomer service club, the Fredonia Ladies and
3030 Gents Travel Club, the SFA Foundation, and the Nacogdoches County
3131 Chamber of Commerce, which she served as the first female
3232 president; she was also the founding chairwoman of the Nacogdoches
3333 Heritage Festival; a woman of faith, she was an active congregant of
3434 First Christian Church; and
3535 WHEREAS, Mrs. Swearingen was the devoted mother of 4
3636 children, Sandra Lou, James Douglas, John Novel, and Janet Kay, and
3737 with the passing years, she had the pleasure of seeing her family
3838 grow to include 9 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; in her
3939 leisure time, she loved to cook and entertain; and
4040 WHEREAS, Joyce Swearingen lived a life that was rich in
4141 family, friends, and community service, and those who were
4242 privileged to share in her love and affection will forever hold her
4343 close in their hearts; now, therefore, be it
4444 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
4545 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Joyce Mae Bright
4646 Swearingen and extend sincere condolences to all who mourn her
4747 passing; and, be it further
4848 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4949 prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of
5050 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Joyce
5151 Swearingen.
