H.R. No. 874 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Douglas Brinkley, a history professor at Rice University, won in the Best Latin Jazz Album category at the 65th annual Grammy Awards on February 5, 2023, in Los Angeles; and WHEREAS, Mr. Brinkley received this prestigious accolade for his work as a coproducer on Fandango at the Wall in New York by Arturo O'Farrill and The Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra, featuring the Conga Patria Son Jarocho Collective; in addition, he received a second Grammy nomination in the Best Spoken Word Poetry Album category for Black Men Are Precious, an Ethelbert Miller album he coproduced; he previously won a Grammy for producing the Ted Nash album, Presidential Suite: Eight Variations on Freedom, and he was nominated for another for his collaboration on the soundtrack of the documentary Gonzo; and WHEREAS, The Katherine Tsanoff Brown Professor in Humanities at Rice University, Mr. Brinkley has also served as a presidential historian for CNN and the New-York Historical Society and as a contributing editor for Vanity Fair; his published works include seven New York Times bestselling books, and he has received such honors as the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Book Award; he sits on the boards of Brevard College and the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library, and he is a member of the Century Association and the James Madison Council of the Library of Congress; and WHEREAS, Mr. Brinkley holds a bachelor's degree in U.S. history from The Ohio State University, and he went on to study U.S. diplomatic history at Georgetown University, where he earned his master's degree as well as his doctorate; he also spent a semester at Oxford University; and WHEREAS, Through his skill as a producer, Douglas Brinkley has made valuable contributions to the music industry, and he is indeed deserving of this most recent honor; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Douglas Brinkley on winning a 2023 Grammy Award and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Brinkley as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
