| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, McMurry University in Abilene is marking its 100th |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | anniversary in 2023; and |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | WHEREAS, In 1921, Bishop William Fletcher McMurry appointed |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | Dr. J. W. Hunt to establish a new Methodist college, and in 1923, |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | McMurry College held its first classes with an enrollment of 200 |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | students; by 1926, the campus included an administration building |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | and two dormitories, and a dining hall was added in 1947, followed |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | by an auditorium in 1951; over the years, the campus has continued |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | to grow, and a number of new facilities have been constructed, |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | including a stadium, additional dormitories, classroom buildings, |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | a band hall, a fine arts building, and a welcome center; in 1990, |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | the institution became McMurry University; and |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Today, McMurry University serves more than 1,200 |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | students and offers associate's, baccalaureate, and master's |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | degrees in more than 40 areas of study; founded on Christian |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | principles, the school challenges students to examine the world |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | from multiple perspectives in preparation for lives of leadership, |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | service, and professional success; and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Since its inception, McMurry University has |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | provided its students with an education that has enriched them both |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | academically and personally, and in so doing, it has made important |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | contributions to Texas and the world beyond; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | Legislature hereby commemorate the centennial of McMurry |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | University and extend to all those associated with the institution |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | prepared for McMurry University as an expression of high regard by |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | the Texas House of Representatives. |
