7 | 7 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |
---|
8 | 8 | | SECTION 1. Section 901.252, Occupations Code, is amended to |
---|
9 | 9 | | read as follows: |
---|
10 | 10 | | Sec. 901.252. ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS. To be eligible to |
---|
11 | 11 | | receive a certificate, a person must: |
---|
12 | 12 | | (1) satisfy the requirements of Section 901.253; |
---|
13 | 13 | | (2) complete at least 150 semester hours or |
---|
14 | 14 | | quarter-hour equivalents in board-recognized courses, including an |
---|
15 | 15 | | accounting concentration or equivalent courses that meet the |
---|
16 | 16 | | education requirements established under Section 901.254 or |
---|
17 | 17 | | 901.255, as determined by board rule; |
---|
18 | 18 | | (3) pass the uniform CPA examination; |
---|
19 | 19 | | (4) meet the work experience requirements established |
---|
20 | 20 | | under Section 901.256; and |
---|
21 | 21 | | (5) pass an examination on the rules of professional |
---|
22 | 22 | | conduct as determined by board rule. |

23 | 23 | | SECTION 2. Section 901.254, Occupations Code, is amended to |
---|
24 | 24 | | read as follows: |
---|
25 | 25 | | Sec. 901.254. EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS. To be eligible to |
---|
26 | 26 | | take the uniform CPA examination, an applicant must: |
---|
27 | 27 | | (1) hold a baccalaureate or graduate degree, or its |
---|
28 | 28 | | equivalent as determined by board rule, conferred by a |
---|
29 | 29 | | board-recognized institution of higher education; and |
---|
30 | 30 | | (2) complete at least 120 [150] semester hours or |
---|
31 | 31 | | quarter-hour equivalents in board-recognized courses, including at |
---|
32 | 32 | | least 24 semester hours of [an] accounting [concentration] or |
---|
33 | 33 | | equivalent courses as determined by board rule. |
---|
34 | 34 | | SECTION 3. Section 901.256(a), Occupations Code, is amended |
---|
35 | 35 | | to read as follows: |
---|
36 | 36 | | (a) To be eligible to receive a certificate, a person must |
---|
37 | 37 | | complete[: |
---|
38 | 38 | | [(1) at least two years of work experience under the |
---|
39 | 39 | | supervision of a certified public accountant; or |
---|
40 | 40 | | [(2)] at least one year of work experience acceptable |
---|
41 | 41 | | to the board, including experience providing a service or advice |
---|
42 | 42 | | involving accounting, attest services, management or financial |
---|
43 | 43 | | advisory or consulting services, tax services, or other services |
---|
44 | 44 | | the board considers appropriate for an accountant, if the person: |
---|
45 | 45 | | (1) [(A)] has completed at least 150 semester hours of |
---|
46 | 46 | | college credits; or |
---|
47 | 47 | | (2) [(B)] holds a graduate degree. |
---|
48 | 48 | | SECTION 4. Sections 901.252 and 901.256(a), Occupations |
---|
49 | 49 | | Code, as amended by this Act, apply only to an application for a |
---|
50 | 50 | | public accountant certificate submitted on or after the effective |
---|
51 | 51 | | date of this Act. An application for a public accountant |
---|
52 | 52 | | certificate submitted before the effective date of this Act is |
---|
53 | 53 | | governed by the law in effect on the date the application was |
---|
54 | 54 | | submitted, and the former law is continued in effect for that |
---|
55 | 55 | | purpose. |
---|
56 | 56 | | SECTION 5. Section 901.254, Occupations Code, as amended by |
---|
57 | 57 | | this Act, applies only to an application to take an examination |
---|
58 | 58 | | submitted on or after the effective date of this Act. An |
---|
59 | 59 | | application to take an examination submitted before the effective |
---|
60 | 60 | | date of this Act is governed by the law in effect on the date the |
---|
61 | 61 | | application was submitted, and the former law is continued in |
---|
62 | 62 | | effect for that purpose. |
---|
63 | 63 | | SECTION 6. This Act takes effect September 1, 2023. |
