| 5 | 5 | | relating to training for peace officers on responding to and |

| 6 | 6 | | investigating child fatalities. |

| 7 | 7 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

| 8 | 8 | | SECTION 1. Section 1701.253, Occupations Code, is amended |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | by adding Subsection (q) to read as follows: |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | (q) As part of the minimum curriculum requirements, the |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | commission shall require an officer to complete a training program |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | on responding to and investigating child fatalities, including the |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | protocols for reporting and investigating child fatalities |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | developed under Subchapter F, Chapter 264, Family Code, the |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | differences between sudden unexpected infant death and sudden |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | infant death syndrome, and the relevant regulations applicable to |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | child-care facilities. An officer shall complete the program not |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | later than the second anniversary of the date the officer is |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | licensed under this chapter unless the officer completes the |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | program as part of the officer's basic training course. |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | SECTION 2. Not later than January 1, 2024, the Texas |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | Commission on Law Enforcement shall establish the training program |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | required by Section 1701.253(q), Occupations Code, as added by this |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | Act. |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | SECTION 3. Section 1701.253(q), Occupations Code, as added |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | by this Act, applies only to a person who submits an application for |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | a peace officer license under Chapter 1701, Occupations Code, on or |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | after January 1, 2024. A person who submits an application for a |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | peace officer license under Chapter 1701, Occupations Code, before |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | January 1, 2024, is governed by the law in effect immediately before |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | the effective date of this Act, and the former law is continued in |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | effect for that purpose. |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | SECTION 4. This Act takes effect September 1, 2023. |
