49 SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
510 WHEREAS, The one-of-a-kind sweets shops found in downtown
611 Mineola have made the city a popular destination for residents and
712 visitors alike; and
813 WHEREAS, Mineola's downtown has grown into a popular shopping
914 and dining area that epitomizes the town's abundant charm; home to
1015 unique stores, famous restaurants, and historic buildings, it is
1116 also renowned for the tasty treats made in house by several local
1217 merchants; and
1318 WHEREAS, The community's world-class sweets shops include
1419 Grandma Cleda's Gourmet Candy & Gifts, the Mineola Fudge Shop at
1520 Between Friends, Bryan's Cheesecakes, FarmHouse Fried Pies, and
1621 Sugarbakers of Mineola; between them, these establishments offer a
1722 range of pies, cakes, cookies, fudge, lemon bars, ice cream,
1823 milkshakes, malts, and peanut and pecan brittles; in addition to
1924 gaining a faithful following in the local area, Mineola's sweets
2025 shops have been featured on television, in magazines, and in online
2126 media, and some of the businesses ship their products nationwide;
2227 and
2328 WHEREAS, Mineola has long been renowned for special
2429 celebrations and was designated as the City of Festivals by the 72nd
2530 Texas Legislature in 1991; while such events as the May Fiesta and
2631 the Iron Horse Heritage Festival remain beloved annual traditions,
2732 the city's stature as an epicenter for sweets stores has become an
2833 increasingly prominent draw in recent years; and
2934 WHEREAS, The unique and delectable sweets sold in downtown
3035 Mineola have made the city a favorite among dessert lovers, and the
3136 town's bountiful selection of sugary delights plays an important
3237 role in the culture and sense of community shared by its citizens;
3338 now, therefore, be it
3439 RESOLVED, That the 88th Legislature of the State of Texas
3540 hereby designate Mineola as the official Sweets Capital of Texas,
3641 replacing the city's previous designation as the City of Festivals;
3742 and, be it further
3843 RESOLVED, That, in accordance with the provisions of Section
3944 391.003(e), Government Code, this designation remain in effect
4045 until the 10th anniversary of the date this resolution is finally
4146 passed by the legislature.
