4	9		SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
5	10		WHEREAS, The one-of-a-kind sweets shops found in downtown
6	11		Mineola have made the city a popular destination for residents and
7	12		visitors alike; and
8	13		WHEREAS, Mineola's downtown has grown into a popular shopping
9	14		and dining area that epitomizes the town's abundant charm; home to
10	15		unique stores, famous restaurants, and historic buildings, it is
11	16		also renowned for the tasty treats made in house by several local
12	17		merchants; and
13	18		WHEREAS, The community's world-class sweets shops include
14	19		Grandma Cleda's Gourmet Candy & Gifts, the Mineola Fudge Shop at
15	20		Between Friends, Bryan's Cheesecakes, FarmHouse Fried Pies, and
16	21		Sugarbakers of Mineola; between them, these establishments offer a
17	22		range of pies, cakes, cookies, fudge, lemon bars, ice cream,
18	23		milkshakes, malts, and peanut and pecan brittles; in addition to
19	24		gaining a faithful following in the local area, Mineola's sweets
20	25		shops have been featured on television, in magazines, and in online
21	26		media, and some of the businesses ship their products nationwide;
22	27		and
23	28		WHEREAS, Mineola has long been renowned for special
24	29		celebrations and was designated as the City of Festivals by the 72nd
25	30		Texas Legislature in 1991; while such events as the May Fiesta and
26	31		the Iron Horse Heritage Festival remain beloved annual traditions,
27	32		the city's stature as an epicenter for sweets stores has become an
28	33		increasingly prominent draw in recent years; and
29	34		WHEREAS, The unique and delectable sweets sold in downtown
30	35		Mineola have made the city a favorite among dessert lovers, and the
31	36		town's bountiful selection of sugary delights plays an important
32	37		role in the culture and sense of community shared by its citizens;
33	38		now, therefore, be it
34	39		RESOLVED, That the 88th Legislature of the State of Texas
35	40		hereby designate Mineola as the official Sweets Capital of Texas,
36	41		replacing the city's previous designation as the City of Festivals;
37	42		and, be it further
38	43		RESOLVED, That, in accordance with the provisions of Section
39	44		391.003(e), Government Code, this designation remain in effect
40	45		until the 10th anniversary of the date this resolution is finally
41	46		passed by the legislature.
